A court in Udupi has sentenced a man to five years of rigorous imprisonment and fined him Rs 40,000 for assaulting and threatening to kill a prison warden. The incident took place on December 3, 2011, at the district prison in Anjaru village under the Hiriyadka police station limits.
The jail warden was taking charge and had asked the prisoners to proceed to their respective barracks so that their numbers could be counted. Safan Hussain alias Razak, an undertrial prisoner who was near the kitchen at the time, allegedly confronted the warden, told him that he had gone too far and threatened to kill him. He also allegedly slapped the warden on the left cheek, causing severe pain.
Hiriyadka police registered a case under Sections 506 and 333 of the IPC.
Police filed the chargesheet before the court on January 10, 2012, under the same sections.
The accused was released on bail on May 29, 2013. The case was being heard, but he failed to appear before the court and remained absconding. As he continued to stay away from the proceedings, the case was ordered to be treated as an LPC on June 24, 2022.
The accused was eventually produced before the Principal District and Sessions Court in Udupi on a body warrant on April 23, 2026. After the trial, the court on September 28, 2026, sentenced Safan Hussain to five years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 40,000.
