Nine individuals were booked after a 60-year-old man died in a clash between two Muslim groups over recovery of pending money from an old transaction in the Kosikalan area of Mathura district, police said on Tuesday. According to the police, the deceased, Qadir, was a resident of the Muslim-dominated Nikasa locality of Kosikalan.

Kosikalan SHO Kamlesh Singh said that preparations were underway for the wedding procession of the complainant’s cousin, Saim, in the Nikasa locality on Monday. During this time, a dispute arose between the complainant, Rashid, and his neighbour, Naeem, over recovery of pending money from an old transaction.
The dispute escalated into a major confrontation. By the time the police were informed, both sides had begun pelting each other with stones and attacking one another with sticks and clubs, the SHO said.
Amidst the stone-pelting, Rashid’s father, Qadir, sustained critical injuries and was rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Upon hearing the news, a large crowd gathered in the neighbourhood, the police said.
The body of the deceased has been sent for a post-mortem, the police said. Observing the deteriorating situation, Kosikalan SHO arrived at the spot with police reinforcements from neighbouring stations and brought the situation under control.
The SHO said, based on the complaint, the police have registered a case against nine individuals, including Naeem, under relevant sections of the BNS of murder and rioting.
Raids were also conducted to arrest the accused, but they were found to have fled their homes, the SHO said, adding that prima facie, there were no visible signs of injury on the deceased’s body.
However, the exact cause of death is expected to be known in the post-mortem report. A heavy police force has been deployed in the area due to the prevailing tension. Singh added that efforts are on to identify those involved in the stone-pelting using CCTV and video footage.
