Chennai: A 29-year-old man was arrested for snatching an 8-gram gold chain from a young woman at Palavanthangal railway station after being chased and caught by alert commuters with the assistance of a railway police constable.
The incident occurred on Wednesday evening when Abhinaya 21, a resident of Chengalpet, was walking near the ticket counter at Palavanthangal railway station after visiting relatives. Police said the accused suddenly approached her, snatched the gold chain from around her neck and attempted to flee.
Hearing her cries for help, passengers at the station and a railway police constable chased the suspect and apprehended him on the platform before handing him over to the St. Thomas Mount railway police.
During interrogation, the accused was identified as Manikandan, 29, of Tiruvarur district. Police said he was a B.Sc. Hotel Management graduate who had come to Chennai in search of employment. Preliminary inquiry revealed that he allegedly resorted to chain-snatching after failing to find a job and running out of money.
Railway police recovered the 8-gm gold chain from the accused and returned it to the complainant after completing the necessary legal formalities.
Police instructed her not to alter the chain, as it may be required to be produced before the court during the trial.
Manikandan was produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody at Puzhal central prison. Further investigation is under way.
