Man Utd beaten by Atletico as Yoro controversially sent off

Manchester United failed to ease the pressure on Michael Carrick as they were beaten 2-0 at Atletico Madrid in the Champions League after Leny Yoro’s controversial second-half sending off.

United, now winless in five games in all competitions, went behind after just 47 seconds as Atletico sliced through with a simple ball over the top which allowed Alex Baena to square for Pablo Barrios to give Carrick a nightmare start in Madrid.

Substitute Ademola Lookman sealed the victory for Diego Simeone’s side late in the second half with Atletico’s second goal just five minutes after Yoro was shown a straight red card following an on-field review by referee Glenn Nyberg.

Clinton Morrison provides the latest update from Manchester United’s ‘nightmare start’ against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.

The France international was deemed to have denied Atletico’s Jonathan David a goalscoring opportunity after a coming together between the pair just inside United’s half. “It is soft! No way, that should not be a red,” Clinton Morrison said on Soccer Special.

The referee had earlier disallowed Johnny Cardoso’s goal for Atletico just before half-time that would have doubled their lead, with Marcos Llorente judged to have handled the ball when his arm was in an unnatural position in the build up.

United were clearly second best but had more than enough opportunities to draw level with Bryan Mbeumo sending a deflected shot narrowly wide and captain Bruno Fernandes hitting the bar after spurning a decent opening on the break.

United, who remain on three points in the Champions League league phase, can have no complaints about losing in Madrid after yet another disjointed performance which only adds to the scrutiny on their head coach ahead of a Sunday’s trip to Leeds in the league, live on Sky Sports.
