A Philadelphia police officer was fatally shot and another was wounded on Saturday after responding to a report of a man with a gun, authorities said.

Shane Seiber, 40, was killed early on Saturday morning in West Philadelphia, according to the city’s police commissioner, Kevin Bethel.

Seiber, a 10-year veteran of the Philadelphia police department, and the other officer were transported to the Penn Presbyterian medical center, where the surviving officer underwent surgery. He was listed in stable condition, Bethel said.

Bethel also said a suspect was in custody.

Citing law enforcements sources, the Philadelphia Inquirer identified that suspect as Eric Lewis. The Inquirer also reported that Lewis, 35, was employed by Philadelphia’s municipal water department.

Pennsylvania’s governor, Josh Shapiro, said he ordered flags to fly at half-mast for Seiber. He is survived by his wife and two children: a boy, age seven, and a girl, three.

Seiber was at least the 376th Philadelphia police department officer to die in the line of duty since 1851, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page, which honors US law enforcement personnel who died while on the job. He was the 129th of those officers to die from gunfire, the memorial page said.
