Dominic Solanke 90+2′
Ten-man Tottenham rescued a deserved 1-1 draw against Manchester United in injury time in a dramatic Premier League game at Old Trafford.
Dominic Solanke’s deft header into the bottom corner saw Spurs get the point their performance deserved after missing a host of chances in the game, with Bryan Mbeumo’s second-half looking for a long time like sealing the points for a United team who were second best in the match.
Spurs will be even more pleased to take something the game after a red card for Rodrigo Bentancur, who was sent his marching orders for head-butting Luke Shaw.
The draw leaves Man Utd remain on just one Premier League win in six this season, while Roberto De Zerbi’s men are still waiting for their first victory of the campaign and climb off the bottom of the table to 18th.
Match Statistics
Spurs wasteful again
A familiar story for their season so far, Spurs will have been left kicking themselves in the first half after seeing several chances pass them by despite an encouraging performance.
They should have taken the lead inside three minutes when a poor pass from Senne Lammens allowed Lucas Bergvall to send Dominic Solanke through on goal, but the striker’s effort was saved before the goalkeeper smothered the rebound.
The visitors continued to create chances, with Mohammed Kudus wasting a golden opportunity in the 21st minute after Savio cut the ball back into his path. The winger could only fire wide, leaving De Zerbi frustrated on the touchline as Spurs failed to turn their dominance into goals.
United gradually found their feet but offered little going forward, with Amad Diallo’s tame effort their first shot of the game.
Spurs remained on top, however, and had another excellent opening when Solanke played in Conor Gallagher, only for the midfielder to hesitate and allow the recovering defence to snuff out the danger.
Mbeumo punishes Spurs
United started much brighter after the break initially, with a nice move seeing a Luke Shaw cross diverted away by Jan Paul van Hecke, but Spurs’ chances kept coming too – as did more missed opportunities.
Savio was unable to get enough power on a shot to find goal after beating Senne Lammens, before Solanke spooned a first-time finish over after a ball across from Savio.
United undoubtedly were offering more though early in the secod period, with Youri Tielemans finding the bottom corner from Matheus Cunha’s pass but the ball had gone out of play on the byline just before. The game was stretched at this point and it seemed to suit United, even if their pressure didn’t result in too many clear-cut chances.
Anothet golden chance went the way of the visitors instead, with Savio’s shot deflected over thanks to a terrific block from Kobbie Mainoo.
It seemed all evening like these chances would come back to haunt De Zerbi’s men, and the story of their season appeared to continue when Mbeumo picked the ball off Cunha and turned inside the box before slotting a trademark finish across goal into the bottom corner.
Bentancur sees red but Spurs fight back
Their task was made even harder when Bentancur was dismissed for headbutting Shaw after the left-back reacted angrily to the Uruguayan’s initial dangerous-looking challenge. Shaw and Van Hecke were also booked for the malaise, but Bentancur could have no complaints about the decision and the look of dejection from De Zerbi was clear to see as another defeat now looked imminent.
But the unlikely goal did finally come in added time for Spurs, with Sandro Tonali’s cross taking the slightest of touches off Solanke before the ball rolled all the way into the far corner with United’s players stationary.
