Preview for Manchester United v Bournemouth

Under-pressure Manchester United boss Michael Carrick walked into his press conference at Carrington on Friday and spoke for more than five minutes before taking a single question, delivering an impassioned speech about the club’s values ahead of Sunday’s visit of Bournemouth.

“I just want to say a few things really, I think it’s important,” Carrick began. “I think recently we haven’t had a good time, I think that’s pretty obvious. I totally accept that, what we’re going through at the moment.”

The backdrop could hardly be bleaker. Wednesday’s 4-1 humiliation at Como, a club in its first-ever Champions League campaign, extended United’s winless run to seven games in all competitions. They are 13th in the Premier League, with one win and seven points from their first seven games, and their last three league matches against Leeds, Tottenham and Fulham have all ended in draws.

Carrick didn’t hide from the Como defeat. “Wednesday was a bad night, it was a bad night for a lot of reasons, and it was a bad night that hurt a lot,” he said. “It hurt me to see us play that way, to see how the game panned out.”

The United boss spoke repeatedly about the club’s history, invoking Sir Alex Ferguson, Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney, Sir Matt Busby and Sir Bobby Charlton as he stressed that Manchester United “will always will be bigger than any single individual. Bigger than me, bigger than any of the players.”

The central theme of his message was humility. “It comes down to humility, it comes down to being humble, it comes down to being hard-working and being really proud to work hard and being proud to live up to them values,” Carrick said.

He also made it clear that nobody at the club, including himself, should feel safe. “I’m not entitled to be here. Entitlement cannot be here at this football club. We’re not entitled to win,” he said. “We’ve won in the past, we’ve got an incredible history but that doesn’t mean that you’re entitled to just win.”

Carrick was asked whether he is still the right man for the job, and he said he “100%” backs himself. “That spirit, that unity, that togetherness needs to be there. And it is there, and it will be there. I’ll make sure it’s there anyway,” he said. “I’m just looking for the solutions to move us forward, that’s plain and simple.”

The speculation around him isn’t going away. Fabian Hürzeler and Unai Emery have been linked with the job, as have free agents Antonio Conte, Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann. Conte said just minutes before Carrick’s press conference that he is not in advanced talks with any club, and Hürzeler insisted on Friday that his focus is on Brighton.

Bournemouth arrive at Old Trafford in a far better mood. Marco Rose’s side thrashed AC Milan 3-0 in the Europa League on Thursday night, making it three wins from three in Europe, and they have climbed out of the relegation zone to 15th. They have six points from seven league games, just one point fewer than United.

They have also been a problem for United in recent seasons. The last meeting between the sides ended in a 2-2 draw.

The Premier League Table

  • Position 1, 2, 3, 4 : Promotion – Champions League (League phase)
  • Position 5 : Promotion – Europa League (League phase)
  • Position 18, 19, 20 : Relegation – Championship

Team News for Manchester United v Bournemouth

United have a long injury list. Patrick Dorgu, Benjamin Šeško, Tom Heaton and Manuel Ugarte are all ruled out, which leaves Carrick short of options in several positions.

Leny Yoro’s suspension only applied to the Champions League, so he is available to return at centre-back. Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo were both doubts earlier in the week.

Bruno Fernandes’s place in the side has come under scrutiny after the Como defeat, with some pundits calling for Carrick to drop his captain.

Bournemouth may need to manage tired legs after Thursday’s win over Milan. Julián Araújo, Veljko Milosavljević, Alex Scott and Eli Junior Kroupi were all unavailable for the Europa League game.

Prediction for Manchester United v Bournemouth

For all Carrick’s talk of respecting United’s values, he still has to get a tune out of an under-performing squad. Bournemouth have been superb in their last two games and will bring a verve to Old Trafford that the home side may find hard to match.
