Chennai: Heavy overnight rain inundated residential areas in Mudichur, Varadharajapuram and Annai Anjugam Nagar near Tambaram, leaving residents worried about further flooding and the safety of more than 10 electricity poles that have reportedly tilted in Varadharajapuram.

Although rain subsided by Sunday morning, water stagnated at a depth of nearly three feet in vacant plots adjoining residential areas, raising fears that another spell of heavy rain could push water into homes.

Residents said blocked or obstructed connecting drains were preventing rainwater from flowing out of the affected areas. They urged the authorities to clear the blockages and remove the stagnant water before further rainfall worsened the situation.

The overnight downpour caused considerable inconvenience to residents, who fear that rising water levels could inundate houses if the drainage problem is not addressed promptly.

Meanwhile, more than 10 electricity poles were found leaning in parts of Varadharajapuram, prompting residents to seek immediate intervention from the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco).

Residents said the poles tilted despite the absence of strong winds during Saturday night’s thunderstorm. They suspect that prolonged rainfall may have softened the soil around the bases of the poles.

With the soil remaining saturated after the downpour, residents fear that the poles could tilt further or collapse if heavy rain or strong winds return, potentially causing electrical accidents and endangering lives and property.

They urged electricity department officials to inspect the affected poles, assess the stability of their foundations and carry out repairs or replacement wherever necessary before the next spell of heavy rain.

Residents also called for urgent action to restore drainage links and clear the accumulated water in the low-lying areas as the northeast monsoon intensifies.
