Martha Stewart released a statement explaining her motives after her controversial Halloween outfit was met with criticism for being tone deaf
Martha Stewart has been forced to apologise, somewhat, after her Halloween outfit received huge backlash. The home and garden expert, 85, dressed up as a panhandler with a dirt-smudged face for the scare fest.
She wore ripped clothes and held a sign that red: “I am hungry help me.” She stood on the porch of her home with a glum look on her face as she posed with her pets.
But her choice was met with rage online, leading the star to offer a quick comment on her actions. She released a statement, but seemed to stop short of realising what she had done.

She claimed she was “distressed” to discover her outfit choice had caused offence. In her words to Page Six, she didn’t offer a usual apology, but said she had “intended to bring more awareness to the very serious subject of homelessness”.
She went on: “Homelessness continues to remain one of America’s greatest challenges and ongoing crises, something that I care deeply about and I have spent a significant amount of time and effort supporting charities that combat this ongoing social epidemic. [I’m] committed to continuing to make a difference.”
She went on to say Halloween is “one of [her] favorite holidays of the year”. She said she had “spent decades teaching others how to celebrate Halloween – sharing fun, festive recipes, providing unique craft ideas, and giving tips on entertaining and hosting”.
Martha has since deleted her Halloween post from social media. Her costume was branded as “tone deaf” as American news has been dominated by conversations regarding economic anxieties in the build-up to the upcoming midterm elections.
According to the Pew Research Center last month, 60% of respondents said “they do not currently have enough income to lead the kind of life they want”. Over four in 10 also said they had trouble paying for basic necessities such as food, housing, daily transportation and medical care.
Previously, the US veteran has been very open about her wealth. At the height of her fame, she was a billionaire.
However, legal issues saw her convicted on charges relating to insider trading. She was sentenced to five months in prison.
And she admitted to the Other People’s Business podcast recently that she earned approximately “$65 million a year in royalties” from a previous deal with Kmart. She said she struggled as her empire collapsed but she’s now built her business back up again.
At the time, she told the podcast said: “I fell in a hole, and I lost about $1 billion … [The] lawyers took me to the cleaners. … I’m back [now]. I’m pretty good.”
