In a video, Martha said Melvin accidentally spilled chocolate on her sweater during the show’s October 30, 2026, episode. Revealing she had no other choice, Martha said:
“He spilled chocolate all over my white sweater, which I was gonna wear on Halloween night. When I picked up the sweater, I said, ‘Oh god, it’s so dirty. I only have 10 minutes to get dressed for this Halloween party.’ So the easiest costume was to get dressed up as a bum.”
Martha revealed that since she had no time to get dressed again for Halloween, she opted for the homeless look, as she looked really messy. In her words:
“I looked at myself, and I said, ‘You really look hungry and homeless,’ so I wrote a sign that said, ‘I’m hungry.’ And boy, did that go off.”
News outlets reached out to a rep for Melvin, but couldn’t reach them for comment. On the Halloween episode of Today, Stewart recreated the 2026 Winter Olympics look, and Melvin was dressed as her longtime friend Snoop Dogg. As Melvin reached for the chocolate ganache, he accidentally spilled some on Stewart. She was shocked and chided, “Real Snoop would never do that,” to which Melvin quickly replied, “So sorry, Martha.”

Soon after the backlash, Martha deleted the photos and addressed the issue in a statement to Page Six. She claimed that the entire affair has left her distressed, as her only intention behind dressing up as a homeless person was to bring more awareness to the subject.
She also penned an apology to her huge fanbase. Martha admitted screwing up people’s emotions and called her look ‘insensitive’. Penning about the same, she wrote:
“It’s hard to admit when you’ve really screwed up. My earlier statement didn’t go far enough. I know many people are suffering economically. Wearing a costume like I did was insensitive and not funny. I am very sorry.”
