Viewers call the 1987 Vietnam War movie a “masterpiece” saying its brutal portrayal of combat is “unparalleled”

War films have captivated audiences globally for decades. Cinema-goers have embraced numerous classics thanks to their visceral battle sequences, compelling narratives and authentic depictions of warfare.

However, there’s one Vietnam War picture from the 1980s that devotees still regard as the finest ever produced. Despite being released almost four decades ago, fans continue to hail it as a “masterpiece”.

The film also boasts an impressive Rotten Tomatoes rating, scoring 90% with critics and 94% with audiences.

That film is Full Metal Jacket, the 1987 war drama directed and produced by Stanley Kubrick.

Adapted from Gustav Hasford’s autobiographical novel The Short-Timers, the picture chronicles a platoon of US Marines throughout the Vietnam War.

The opening half of the movie centres on punishing boot camp training at Parris Island under the unforgiving Gunnery Sergeant Hartman, while the latter portion tracks Marines engaged in combat during the Tet Offensive in Vietnam, reports the Express.

The film features Matthew Modine as Joker, Vincent D’Onofrio as Leonard “Gomer Pyle” Lawrence and R. Lee Ermey as Sergeant Hartman.

Ermey’s turn became one of the most iconic elements of the picture. Much of his dialogue was improvised, drawing on his real-life experience as a Marine drill instructor during the Vietnam War.

Full Metal Jacket premiered in the United States in June 1987 and subsequently arrived in the UK that September.

It went on to rake in approximately $120million worldwide. The picture also garnered multiple award nominations, including an Academy Award nod for Best Adapted Screenplay and two BAFTA nominations.

Enthusiasts continue to heap praise on the film across social media for its unflinching and harrowing depiction of warfare.

One viewer stated in a Rotten Tomatoes review: “Words can’t explain the emotion this story brings as you tag along to experience the full lifecycle of war in this Kubrick masterpiece.”

Another contributed: “Definitely the best war movie of all time! Full Metal Jacket proves Stanley Kubrick really can’t make a bad movie.”

A third observed: “One of Kubrick’s foremost triumphs, a genuinely challenging and uncomfortable war film.”

Someone else remarked: “In my opinion, it’s the best movie I have ever seen so far in my life. Its ability to portray the nature of war is unparalleled by anything I have ever seen.

“Brutal, visceral and raw, this movie has all the components necessary for a spectacular war epic.”
