Chennai: The TVK government’s much touted ‘Thaimaman Thanga Mothiram’ (Maternal Uncle’s Golden Ring) scheme, under which babies born in government hospitals will be presented a one sovereign golden ring each, will be launched by Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on September 28 by gifting the rings to 100 babies born every day since June 22 in each of the 107 hubs in the State.
Under the scheme, aimed at instilling confidence among the people in the government’s health and welfare schemes and to reaffirm the Tamil tradition of the maternal uncle gifting the first golden ring to the newly born child, 1,28,000 rings have already been procured for gifting in the first instalment on September 28, an official press release said.
At a review meeting of the scheme, presided over by the Chief Minister, at the Secretariat on Friday, the date for the inauguration was finalized and it was disclosed that the ring would come with an Unique Serial Number and tamper-proof packaging, the press release said.
Women residing in the State and registered under PICME (Pregnancy and Infant Cohort Monitoring and Evaluation, which is a system to track all pregnant women), and having a RCH (Reproductive and Child Health) ID number would be eligible for the benefit of the scheme – the golden ring that would be given when the women gets discharged from hospital.
Only babies born in government hospitals would be eligible to get the ring, the release said, adding government hospitals in Tamil Nadu accounted for 4.20 lakh deliveries a year, which was 53 per cent of the total 7.80 lakh children born in the State every year. According to the National Family Health Survey – VI, 99.9 per cent of the deliveries were in hospitals.
Of the 4.20 lakh deliveries in government hospitals, 90 per cent were in the CEmONC (Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care) centres that use a set of life-saving medical and surgical interventions to treat major complications during pregnancy, childbirth and postnatal period, the release said.
