Matt Brown’s Family Addresses ‘Broken Ties’ Buzz With Him, Shares Dynamic Was ‘Far More Complicated’

Former Alaskan Bush People star, Matt Brown, grabbed the attention when his brother, Bear Brown, took to his TikTok and revealed that the actor was missing. He, in the video, suspected that his brother was possibly dead, and it was a suicide. It was on May 31, 2026, when, with another brother of Matt, Noah helped the cops to identify his body, which was found in Washington’s Okanogan River. The cause of the death has not been officially confirmed just yet, however, Bear Brown has said that he could never think that his brother would take a drastic step of ending his life, as it seemed to be self-inflicted to him.

With the initial reports about Matt Brown’s sudden disappearance, speculations were rife that he had some tension going on, including family issues and a difficult breakup. Bear Brown confirmed that Matt was going through a painful breakup, but he didn’t extensively speak about the other buzz. To mention, Matt Brown had struggled with substance abuse and alcoholism. Recently, Matt Brown’s family released a statement, wherein they addressed the speculations about the actor cutting ties with the family.

Earlier, family sources revealed to TMZ that Matt Brown’s family cut ties with him five years back, citing their inability to help him through his struggles with addiction. One of Matt’s siblings, Gabe Brown, was in contact with him, but that was reportedly infrequent. In a recent statement to Us Weekly, Matt Brown’s family said that people who are commenting on their dynamic with Matt should know that the truth is far more complicated than what could be shown on TV, adding that mental illness, addiction and those kinds of things not only affect a person, but everyone surrounding them.

What did Matt Brown’s family say about his family dynamics?

As per the statement, it was mentioned that it often happens that some challenges lead the family to make strong decisions and set boundaries and go through phases of separations, but it never means that the love was lost for the person, who is the centre of the struggle, and the same happened to Matt’s family as well. The statement also mentioned that while Matt’s certain deeds caused hurt, his life couldn’t be defined by only the lows. The statement could be read as:

“Families facing these challenges often make difficult decisions, establish boundaries, and endure periods of separation while never losing their love for the person at the center of the struggle. Our family was no different. Matt’s life was not without mistakes, struggles, and painful chapters. Like all of us, he was imperfect. Some of those chapters caused hurt, and we do not minimize that. At the same time, we do not believe that any person’s life should be defined solely by their lowest moments, especially when there was so much more to who they were.”

In the same statement, Matt Brown’s family further added that his dad, Billy Brown, had trust that the Alaskan Bush People star could overcome his addiction and find peace, and helped him through rehab programs, treatments and everything else that was needed for his recovery.

This support continued even after Billy Brown died, and as per the family, in the recent months of Matt’s struggles, the family even tried to reconnect with him and offer help. The family further added that Matt will be missed and will be remembered as someone who learned ancient symbols and forgotten histories, but not as someone who had his share of struggles marked by addiction and mental illness. An excerpt from the statement could be read as:

“We will remember the young man who could navigate rough waters, draw for hours, lose himself in learning ancient symbols and forgotten histories, make us laugh unexpectedly, and dream bigger than most people ever dare. He was imperfect. He was human. He was deeply loved. And he will be missed beyond words.”
