The Rams and Matthew Stafford have agreed to a contract extension that could extend his stay in Los Angeles for at least the next two seasons.
According to a source with knowledge of the situation, Stafford will sign a one-year extension that could pay him up to $105 million between 2026 and 2027.
The new money in the deal is $55 million, which could grow to $60 million. Stafford was going into the last year of his contract and was scheduled to make $48 million this year.
The 38-year-old Stafford is coming off an MVP season that took the Rams to the brink of the Super Bowl. He will turn 39 in February. Next season will be his 18th in the NFL, but he jhas shown no signs of let-up.
All the more reason for the Rams to make sure he keeps on playing, even with first-round pick Ty Simpson in the fold.
Barring a surprise, Stafford will play the next two years, and, if he decides to retire at that point, will hand things off to Simpson, who will have spent the previous two years learning and developing in the Rams system.
It does not guarantee it will be a seamless handoff, but the Rams now have their quarterback position situated and under cost certainty for the next five seasons, two of which will be with one of the best players in the game.
