Maxx Crosby, Kirk Cousins put on timeout after heated exchange at Raiders practice

LAS VEGAS — A day after getting into a heated exchange at Raiders practice, Maxx Crosby and Kirk Cousins were essentially put in timeout by coach Klint Kubiak on Saturday.

The star edge rusher and veteran quarterback were both present and dressed for the Raiders’ morning workout but were parked on the sideline during team and 11-on-11 periods as punishment for their roles in Friday’s confrontation.

“We have very clear expectations in how we want to practice and how we want to go about our business, and we violated that yesterday,” Kubiak said. “So we held those guys out. That’s all I’m gonna say about it. We addressed it with the team, and we’re moving on.”

And with that, the Raiders turned the page.

Cousins’ absence created an unexpected opportunity for rookie Fernando Mendoza, the first overall pick in the NFL draft, who received all of the first-team quarterback reps.

Mendoza took full advantage.

The rookie delivered one of his strongest practices of training camp, throwing multiple touchdown passes while looking poised and efficient running the offense. His best work came during a crisp two-minute drill in which he methodically moved the Raiders into scoring range, leaving enough time to spike the ball and set up a field-goal attempt.

For a day that began with the Raiders disciplining two of their biggest veteran leaders, it ended with their quarterback of the future getting an extended opportunity to show why they made him the first pick in the draft.
