Recalling the moment, MaryElizabeth said that her father, Randy, got a phone call from her uncle, Alex, who said that his wife, Maggie and his son, Paul, had been badly shot. Hearing the devastating news, Randy rushed out immediately, while MaryElizabeth and her mom and sister stood in shock. Later, MaryElizabeth called another uncle, John Marvin Murdaugh, who told her that nothing could be done as they were already dead.

The major shocker came when the Murdaugh family came to know about Alex’s drug addiction. They also got to know that Alex had been stealing money from the family law firm for years. She recalled how the disturbing photos and videos of her cousin circulated on TikTok and how the double murder turned into entertainment for millions. In her words:

“I watched the biggest heartbreak of my life turned into entertainment for millions. I will never forget how it felt seeing a photograph of my cousin’s blurred dead body on TikTok, and finding out that his brain was found at his ankles from a video that had 3 million ‘Likes’ — my loving cousin, only one year older than myself. I cried for days over that detail.”

In 2021, MaryElizabeth went through a very traumatic incident. At the time, she was a student at the University of South Carolina. For the uninitiated, on May 4, 2021, a stranger who was later identified as Robert Drayton barged into MaryElizabeth’s apartment. Before strangling and sexually assaulting MaryElizabeth, Robert broke her nose and left her to bleed. After 20 minutes of brutal encounter, MaryElizabeth could flee from her apartment and find safety.
