Charlize Theron is a well-known actress and producer. For those unaware, she is among the world’s highest-paid actresses. She rose to prominence in the 1990s and has worked on projects like The Devil’s Advocate, The Cider House Rules, The Old Guard, and Bombshell, to name a few.
At present, Charlize is in the spotlight after opening up about her traumatic childhood, especially the time her father was shot to death by her mother when she was only 15. Now, as a grown woman, Charlize is a single mother to two daughters. If you are curious about them, here’s everything we know about Charlize’s daughter, Jackson and August.
Charlize Theron adopted her first child, Jackson Theron, before she started filming Mad Max: Fury Road

It was in 2012 that Charlize Theron adopted her first child, Jackson Theron. According to a report by People, the adoption took place before Chalize began filming for her hit action movie, Mad Max: Fury Road. Years later, in May 2020, the actress opened up about her first year as a mom. Taking to her social media, she posted a rare throwback photo of her and Jackson on the movie’s set, where Jackson can be seen lying on Charlize’s chest. In the caption, she wrote, I became a mom right before we started shooting. At least my child will forever have the fun fact of ‘I spent most of the first year of my life in a war rig.’”

A year prior to this, in a December 2019 interview with NPR, Charlize discussed her adoption experience. She shared that she “cast a very wide net” when it came to the early stages of the adoption process. She claimed that she wanted to believe that her child would somehow find her if they were meant to be. Apparently, she filed for adoption in whatever country would allow a single woman to adopt, and wasn’t specific about anything. Interestingly, both of Charlize’s ended up being African-American who were born in the United States.

When it comes to Jackson’s bond with her younger sister, while they are very close, just like most siblings, they also share a fair bit of sibling tension. When Charlize appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2018, she explained that her children’s relationship has evolved now that they have grown up a bit. While talking to Ellen, the actress confessed that when her daughters were 1.5 and 5 years old, respectively, they would always play nicely together.

She also claimed that their relationship “made [her] every single day.” Charlize added, “”Now I cry, but not because it’s peaceful and loving anymore…The 1-year-old is now almost 3, and she’s like, ‘No.’ The older one is like, ‘What? What do you mean, no? I said let’s do this!’ It’s like war in our house every single day.”
Charlize Theron homeschooled her kids during COVID-19

According to People, Charlize began homeschooling her kids just like many other parents around the world when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. However, for the Atomic Blade star, the experience was “incredibly stressful.” One of the reasons for this was that Math is not her strong suit. She jokingly told People in an interview in July 2020 that she is a “terrible math teacher,” according to her daughter, Jackson. She said:
“I [thought] I [was doing] a great job until my 8-year-old was like, ‘Mom, I don’t think you’re very good at this. I don’t think you’re a good teacher. I was like, ‘Oh my God! Why?’ And she goes, ‘Because you’re not really explaining why this problem is solved.’”
Charlize Theron was sad when Jackson started middle school
While speaking to the same publication in September 2023, Charlize said that Jackson was starting middle school. She claimed that when that happened, she was super sad. She said, “I was like, ‘Where’s my baby?” What made the change even harder for Charlize was that her daughter would not accept her hug before going to school. She said that when Jackson said no, it felt like a whole different game.
Charlize Theron rarely posts her youngest daughter, August Theron, on social media

Charlize adopted her younger daughter, August Theron, in July 2015, three years after adopting Jackson. Since then, the actress has rarely posted about her youngest daughter on social media. Although Charlize did make a rare post in January 2022 by sharing a photo of herself and August napping alongside their dog on Instagram. With the post coming just after the start of the new year, she captioned the post, “New year, same energy.”
Charlize Theron thinks a stranger came into their house and taught August martial arts

During an appearance on Jimmy Fallon’s The Tonight Show, Charlize told the host an interesting fact about her daughter, August. The mom of two shared that August had picked up martial arts, and the skill left her completely surprised. Charlize even claimed that she thought it was a stranger who taught it to her. In her words:
“I think a stranger comes into my house at 3 a.m. because none of us use any of the words [my kids use]. The little one learned technical martial arts, like full technical wrestling grips. I don’t know where she learned it … I came in the other day and she literally had my assistant in like, a back lock and a full grip and she wouldn’t let go.”
