During the show, the former NFL star announced that he has been diagnosed with ALS at 39. Chris shared that at the time, he was in the best form, exercising daily and spending time with his four children. He was quoted as saying:
“I want people to know that I’m still me. ALS has changed what my body can do, but it hasn’t changed who I am. At first it was little things like my grip didn’t feel right, and I wasn’t as strong as I’d always been. We hoped it was something else, but after the third test, they finally came down with a diagnosis of ALS.”

He clarified that while his body doesn’t cooperate, his mind stays sharp. He was quoted as saying:
“It’s continued to progress much faster than I ever imagined. I want people to understand just how quickly ALS can attack your body. Just over a year ago I was picking up my 7-year-old daughter so she could make a wish with her birthday cake. Today, I couldn’t do that. My mind stays sharp. People sometimes look at the physical disability and assume you’re not the same person. I still think the same. I still dream. I still love my family. My body just doesn’t cooperate.”

On the show, Good Morning America, Brittany opened up about her first reaction to his ALS diagnosis. She shared that the diagnosis immediately brought concerns about their children. Brittany expressed that she was in denial and wanted the doctors’ findings to be wrong. She added that although the time is tough, they are hopeful. She was quoted as saying:
“All I could think about was our kids and how young they are. You’re in denial. You want it to be anything else. You want the doctors to be wrong. The life that we previously had is now a thing of the past. But we’re still hopeful. We’re hopeful that a breakthrough will happen or that God, a miracle will happen.”

Further on the show, Chris lauded his wife, Brittany and stated that she didn’t leave his side as he got diagnosed with ALS. He also credited his children and shared that it was one of the major reasons due to which he keeps going. He said, “My kids are also a huge part of why I keep going. Every day I wake up wanting more time with them, to make more memories and just be their dad. They give me a reason to keep fighting.”
Then, Brittany acknowledged the challenges of becoming Chris’ primary caregiver. She said, “It’s tough. We have good days, we have bad days. Our life has shifted so much, and it’s a heavy workload, but I have no doubt that this is what I was called to do.”
