Meet Mike Krzyzewski’s Grandson, Joseph Savarino, Charged With DWI After Tragic Car Accident

Mike Krzyzewski also known as Coach K does not need any introduction. He is one of the most known faces in the world of basketball. Over the years, he has led Duke University to five NCAA championships. Currently, the legendary player and coach is dominating the headlines after his grandson named Joseph was charged with DWI. Who is Mike Krzyzewski’s grandson, Joseph Savarino?

It is worth mentioning that not much is available about Joseph; however, for those who do not know, he was one of the grandchildren of veteran basketball coach, Mike Krzyzewski. He is the son of Debbie Savarino. According to a report by Wral News, Joseph is 26-years-old and is from Durham, North Carolina. He also has a brother, Michael Savarino, who played basketball for Duke as a walk-on player. Reportedly, Michael played for his grandfather in nearly 13 matches.

Joseph Savarino’s car accident

For those who do not know, the tragic accident happened on April 18, 2026, near Cole Mill Road and Wyndham Lane in Durham. According to reports, a 15-year-old boy was riding an electric bike. Meanwhile, Joseph, in a SUV, was coming in the same direction. Eventually, the little boy got into the car’s direction and the car hit him. The boy on the electric bike died on the spot because of the impact.

Later, when police arrived, they identified the SUV driver as Joseph Savarino, the grandson of Coach K. When an alcohol test was done, his blood alcohol level came out to be 0.11, which is more than the legal limit. Eventually, Joseph admitted to drinking, leading to charges of driving while impaired (DWI). If reports are to be believed, he was taken into custody and his driving license was also revoked by court. The investigation is still going on.

When Joseph Savarino’s brother, Michael was charged of DWI

It is worth mentioning that Joseph is not the first member of the family to be charged with DWI. Nearly five years ago, his brother, Michael Savarino was also charged with DWI and even faced a legal issue. In 2021, Michael was stopped because of stop sign violation. Later, his blood alcohol level came out as 0.08. This led to a legal case as he was charged with DWI. It is worth noting that Michael was less than 21 years old at that time. Eventually, Michael pleaded guilty and was given 12 months of probation.

15-year-old victim’s mother shares heartbreaking post on Facebook

While the attention is on Joseph Savarino, recently, a report by Wral News claimed that the 15-year-old boy, who died in the accident was Jack O’Shea. Reportedly, her mother shared a heart wrenching post on Facebook, in which she confirmed his identity and shared details about the accident. The mother shared a few photos and penned a long note, in which she described her son as ‘perfect, smart, athletic’ and ‘fearless’. A part of her note can be read as:

“It is with unfathomable sadness that Chris @cosgolf32 and I share that our perfect, smart, athletic, fearless, and handsome baby boy, Jack, passed away yesterday, April 18th, at just 15 years old. We are finding comfort in what was his last perfect day. He woke up and asked to go to confession at Immaculate Conception Church. He then played two baseball games with his high school team, where he did what he always did — showed up fully and excelled at first base. Later, he went on his usual afternoon bike ride with friends. As he was coming back into our neighborhood, he was involved in an accident and was hit by a car. Jesus took him immediately.”
