Savannah Chrisley’s fiancé, Jason Galanis, is facing renewed scrutiny over their 27-year age gap and Galanis’ criminal past as a fraudster. Meanwhile, details from his previous marriage have surfaced, revealing that his ex-wife, Monet Berger, reportedly described herself as a victim of his fraud schemes.
The revelations come shortly after the Chrisley Knows Best star, 29, announced her pregnancy and engagement to Galanis, 56, whose criminal convictions and time in federal prison have drawn serious attention.
Jason Galanis’ ex-wife, Monet Berger, claimed she was a victim of his fraud schemes
Jason and Monet married in October 2006 and parted ways after almost 11 years. Berger filed for divorce in Los Angeles Superior Court in August 2017, citing ‘irreconcilable differences’. The couple didn’t have children together and officially separated via divorce in May 2016.
According to divorce documents recently obtained by Us Weekly, Berger’s legal team claimed that she did not know about Galanis’ alleged financial misconduct during their relationship. She even reportedly received compensation from a fund established to help victims of his crimes, cited in the divorce petition as the Victim’s Defense Fund.
In her divorce petition, Monet reportedly said she was unaware of the extent of the financial liabilities tied to Galanis’ conduct during their marriage. The divorce petition read, “[Berger] is not aware of the extent of the communities’ liability for [Galanis’] conduct during the marriage. She was a victim of his crimes and received compensation from the Victim’s Defense Fund.”

Monet also reportedly sought to separate her financial responsibilities from those associated with her former husband’s businesses and alleged criminal activities. Her attorneys claimed that she did not know about his schemes and asked the court to assign the relevant debts and liabilities to Galanis.
According to the documents, Berger also sought innocent spouse relief for joint tax returns, claiming she was unaware that Galanis had allegedly underpaid or failed to pay certain taxes. She further alleged that he had falsified her signature on more than one tax document.
The divorce proceedings also uncovered an unusual detail about the couple’s marital status. Berger reportedly found correspondence from the Los Angeles County Recorder’s Office indicating that they needed additional information to complete their marriage paperwork. According to the judgment, Galanis did not return the requested information, and the marriage was not officially registered with the California Department of Health.
Because the pair had believed they were married and presented themselves publicly as a married couple, including filing joint tax returns, the court addressed the dissolution of their putative marriage. After Galanis failed to respond to Berger’s divorce petition, the court entered a default judgment in April 2018, assigning him the financial liabilities tied to his conduct rather than to Berger.
Savannah Chrisley’s engagement and pregnancy reveal draw warning from her fiancé’s estranged brother
Galanis’ legal history has attracted renewed attention since Savannah confirmed her pregnancy and announced that she was engaged to him. Beyond the fact that Galanis is only a year younger than Savannah’s controversial father, Todd Chrisley, his past has resurfaced with new information.
In 2020, Galanis was convicted in connection with multimillion-dollar securities fraud schemes and sentenced to nearly 16 years in federal prison. His criminal cases included a scheme involving Wakpamni Lake Community Corp., a business arm of the Oglala Sioux Tribe. President Donald Trump commuted Galanis’ sentence in March 2025. Galanis had also served time alongside Savannah’s father before their sentences were commuted.

Jason Galanis has received criticism from his own brother after news broke of his engagement to Savannah Chrisley. Speaking to Page Six, Derek Galanis called Savannah his brother’s “biggest con yet” and warned that she was “in for a rocky ride.” He also alleged that Jason had not changed despite spending time in prison.
Derek, who was also convicted in a fraud case involving Jason and their father, John Galanis, said he last spoke to his brother in 2016, when they were both incarcerated. In response to the engagement, Derek insisted Jason remained the same person he always was.
