During a podcast appearance last year, the Duchess of Sussex shared a candid insight into their family life in California, revealing the valuable life lesson she is teaching her young kids
Meghan Markle opened up about how she is teaching her two young children, Archie and Lilibet, a valuable life lesson through one of their most-loved pastimes.
During a candid chat on the Aspire by Emma Grede podcast last year, the Duchess of Sussex spoke about her youngsters and their home life in a rare admission.
When host Emma asked whether Meghan had begun talking to her kids about money, the Duchess offered a glimpse into their family life in California, revealing that they occasionally set up a farmer’s market stall where the children can sell their own home-grown produce to neighbours.
Meghan explained that at their Montecito home, the whole family tends to a vegetable garden together, saying: “Gardening is really great for children. It teaches them patience, it teaches them to value and appreciate their food. So you start from seed and wait and watch it grow.”
She continued by revealing that once their veggie patch yields results, Archie and Lilibet earn pocket money by flogging their harvest. Meghan explained: “Well now do you want to sell your harvest? Do you want to share it with our community? And also, what do you want to do with those funds once you have them?
“So really starting to understand, as they’re learning counting and numbers, that there is a cost and a price for things, and I think that’s key for children to understand that. Especially children who are very lucky to have a home that has privilege, you need to know that.
“It’s just like manners and taking care of the things around you, there’s a value on things, and for my husband and I, it’s really important that they understand that.”
Elsewhere during the podcast, Meghan appeared to take a subtle swipe at the Royal Family as host Emma questioned the Duchess about how her celebrity status makes her instantly recognisable.
She tells Meghan: “I wanted to ask you a little bit about the public narrative, because when you sign up to be an actress, you know that people are going to start recognising you, they’re going to start speaking to you on the street. But that’s very different from what you have now.”
Meghan swiftly responds: “It is, Emma! It’s very different” before breaking into laughter. Emma then asks: “If you could rewrite your public narrative from scratch, is there anything that you would do differently?” To which Meghan says: “Yes, I would ask people to tell the truth.”
