Spice Girls star Mel B MBE, known as Scary Spice, has addressed speculation that the group will reunite around 26 June to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their hit single Wannabe — though she confirmed nothing has yet been confirmed or signed off on

Mel B MBE has revealed the Spice Girls “should be doing something” to mark the 30th anniversary of their iconic single Wannabe. The 51-year-old performer, affectionately known as Scary Spice, rose to stardom in 1996 alongside Lady Victoria Beckham, Melanie Chisholm, Emma Bunton and Geri Halliwell-Horner when the girl band released their chart-topping debut.

The quintet ruled the airwaves with anthems including Who Do You Think You Are?, Stop, and Viva Forever, before embarking on an indefinite hiatus in December 2000 – yet devotees continue to yearn for their comeback.

Speaking to the Press Association, Mel B, whose full name is Melanie Brown, responded to rumours the band might reunite around June 26, to honour the three-decade landmark.

She commented: “It’s our 30th anniversary, I do think we should be doing something. Whether that actually happens or not is another story, but we’re all talking about it because, if not anything, just for our fans.

“They’ve been so loyal and they’re just there all the time – even now 30 years on. For that, we should be doing something, but I can’t say what that is right now, because nothing has been confirmed or signed off on.”

The group last came together in 2012 for the London Olympics closing ceremony and once more in 2019 for their Spice World tour, which proceeded without Lady Beckham, famously dubbed Posh Spice. However, in 2020, it was revealed that Mel had quit her role as Team Capital on Celebrity Juice ahead of what was planned to be a “busy year”.

The Daily Star reported at the time that the plans had been linked to a possible reunion of the Spice Girls, who would have been celebrating their 25th anniversary since the release of their debut single.

Brown revealed to PA that her three children brand her “vintage” as she remains “stuck in the 90s” and continues sporting her iconic leopard-print aesthetic.

She commented: “I’m still wearing the same stuff, still listening to the same music.” The Leeds-born performer also quipped that her offspring view her simply as “just mum” instead of a global music sensation, remarking: “It’s just, ‘Mum, what’s for dinner? What’s for tea?'”

Brown, whose youngest is 14, expressed concern about how “worried” she’d feel parenting a six or seven-year-old today, given technology’s influence on young people’s mental wellbeing.

She explained to PA: “I think we’re so used to, in this day and age, putting your phone in front of your kid or an iPad, and when your back’s turned, they could be looking at anything.”

Brown is fronting a campaign with mobile network O2, offering a new call-back service designed to combat “doom-scrolling” and serve as “an important reminder to put the phone down”.

The artist observed: “We’re missing out on so much between being at one with ourselves, communicating with our kids – because we’re completely distracted.

“It’s seriously affecting our sleep, it’s affecting our mental health, a lot of people are getting anxiety. We live in a world where everything is the press of a button on your phone.”

Brown continued: “I see the effect it has on people just worldwide. If I can relieve or find a simple way to help you put your phone down, then that’s what I’m going to do.”
