Blush brilliance

Some looks are loud in colour or silhouette, while others let the details do all the talking.

Rozalia Russian’s custom Alin Le’Kal falls into the latter category, with her blush corseted top and skirt set featuring the most exquisite hand beading. Paired with a coordinating soft pink Melissa Jackson hat, Paris Texas heels and vintage Christian Dior pearls, she’s a vision of refined glamour.

What the jockeys said (part two)

Tommy Berry (Soul Of Spain): “Began well. Found a nice spot early but he was just a bit too honest in the run and he felt the pinch late. Very honest in defeat.”

Ben Melham (Zahrann): “Terrific. Had a good run. Felt like the winner at the top of the straight. Pretty freakish win by the winner.”

Rachel King (So You Are): “Super run. He put himself in a good spot. Very inexperienced horse at the moment and he has plenty more to come and plenty of improvement.”

Jamie Melham (Future History): “He tried hard. At the 600 (metre mark) I thought he was a sneaky hope. He just doesn’t run the trip out at this level but back to 2000/2500m is his go.”

Craig Williams (James J Braddock): “The barrier was a big disadvantage to him today. He is only a three-year-old, lightly raced. You could feel that from the half mile. I had the winner inside of me. Had the third-placed horse in front of me and the fifth-placed horse behind me so I felt like we were in the right spot.”

US Ambassador stops in to Crown

Newly appointed United States Ambassador to Australia David Brat is visiting the Birdcage at Flemington following the running of the 166th running of the Melbourne Cup.

Ambassador Brat was appointed to his post in August and has travelled to Melbourne with his wife Laura. It is his first visit to the southern capital.

‘Obviously wasn’t the plan’: Jockey speaks on Royal Supremacy’s bold tactics

What the jockeys said (part one):

Dylan Browne McMonagle (Sons And Lovers): “He ran great. Got a nice spot and we steadied up a bit halfway but came home well.”

James McDonald (Trustyourinstinct): “He was solid. In a very slowly run race, he is a little bit one-dimensional and we have to flow back. He was going to be there but we just couldn’t get into the race at all.”

Robbie Dolan (Knight’s Choice): “Very proud of him. Amazing little horse. Just getting him back here for the Melbourne Cup after a long time of injuries and sicknesses is amazing. He ran a cracker with five kilos [handicap] on some of those horses. Really proud of him.”

Mark Zahra (Middle Earth): “He was a bit keen in parts. He was travelling OK in the straight but the winner just going a lot better and took my runs. He whacked away all right in the end.”

Grey but not glum

“It arrived at my house at five o’clock last night, the woman’s a genius,” says Gemma Diamond of her sleek grey Effie Kats two-piece look.

The podcast host and MC paired the structured corset and pencil skirt with black accessories for a sophisticated take on raceday style.

“I know Cup Day is all about colour and fun, but I’ve been doing this for so many years now that for me, the most important thing is to feel like myself,” Diamond says.

“I’m not massive into colour. This feels so me, so I know I’m gonna have a good day.”

How the race was won according to the jockey

By Scott Spits

Winning jockey Ethan Brown:

“Looking at the race I thought he has got the best turn of foot in the race by far. I got shuffled back a bit further than I would have liked but I was busy working with him and getting him to settle and I looked up and Royal Supremacy was about 20 in front and I thought ‘oh god’. So I had to just stay cool, stay patient, cut the bend and once he got that clear running his turn of foot was enormous. He is going to be a superstar this. He’s something special.

“When he quickened down at the 350, I thought the race was over then. I know Royal Supremacy was still a fair way in front but there’s not many horses that can quicken like that off the back of the 3200.”

Jules Neale doesn’t know racing but still loves the Cup

Over in the Mumm marquee, the definition of celebrity was quite loosely applied.

In what has seemed like a real-life episode of Days of Our Lives, the booze brand has this week played host to both halves of the soap opera-like Lachie and Jules Neale marriage split.

Jules, the ex-wife of Lachie, a former Brisbane Lions star now new Collingwood recruit, was Mumm’s big name guest on Cup Day.

Maher shows rare emotion

Trainer Ciaron Maher is almost always measured, no matter his achievements, but he let his emotions show as he paid tribute to his partner and children during the trophy presentations.

Maher has made history, becoming the first trainer to train the trifecta (which of course was led by Point Of Law).

Tears are flowing from connections as they raise the Melbourne Cup.

Maher was aware of the post-race events as he finished his speech with: “Bring on Robbie Williams”.
