Merriwa man faces drugs, weapons charges as police probe Joondalup death

Police have charged a Perth man with drugs and weapons offences as they investigate the death of a woman whose body was left on a paramedic’s stretcher in Joondalup on Wednesday morning.

The 35-year-old man from Merriwa, in the city’s far northern suburbs, had been speaking with police since he was located late on Wednesday.

Police had sought the man after he allegedly approached paramedics stationed near Joondalup’s biggest shopping centre about 9.30am on Wednesday while carrying the unconscious woman.

The paramedics soon determined the woman was dead and called police, however the man allegedly left the scene. The woman’s cause of death has not yet been identified.

On Wednesday afternoon, before the 35-year-old man was located, Joondalup Detective Inspector Jayd Morawski said police had spoken to people understood to be family members of the woman, and the man was believed to be known to her.

WA Police revealed on Thursday morning the man had been charged with several drugs and weapons offences as the coronial investigation unit continued to investigate the woman’s death.

The charges followed the execution of a search warrant at his Merriwa home on Wednesday.

The man is due to face Joondalup Magistrates Court on Thursday on charges including unlawful possession of a controlled or prescription drug; possessing a controlled weapon; possessing methamphetamine; possessing drug paraphernalia; and no authority to drive (suspended).

No charges have been laid in relation to the woman’s death.

This masthead understands the man approached an ambulance crew who were typically stationed and working near Joondalup’s largest shopping centre on Grand Boulevard, about 9.30am on Wednesday.

He was seeking help and carrying the unconscious woman, before putting her on the stretcher beside paramedics.

Morawski said he understood the woman was “young”, and called for anyone with information regarding the case to contact police.

“Whilst I think we have a fairly firm understanding of the circumstances at this stage … we seek every piece of evidence we can,” Morawski said.

Police spent Wednesday cordoning off large parts of Joondalup and seizing CCTV and other relevant evidence from a block of nearby apartments and businesses.

Officers urged anyone with information or with dash-cam or CCTV from between 9.30am and 9.45am to contact police as soon as possible.

A St John spokesperson said paramedics were cooperating with the investigation, and the impacted crew was being provided with support.
