Nine years after Kylie Jenner’s iconic 2017 Met Gala bathroom mirror selfie was taken, several other celebs have joined forces to recreate it, including Margot Robbie, Gracie Abrams and Ayo Edebiri

Nine years ago, Kylie Jenner snapped a now infamous mirror selfie in a Met Gala bathroom – now all the celebs are recreating it. Several stars were seen crowding into a shot in the bathroom mirrors at Monday’s (4 May) event, including quite a few A-listers.

The photo was taken by Indian model Bhavitha Mandava. The 26-year-old was at the front and also got in Margot Robbie, Ayo Edebiri, the members of K-Pop band Blackpink, Gracie Abrams and Rachel Sennott.

Bhavitha was in a casual top and some jeans, which she also wore on the carpet outside. The outfit was styled by Chanel. The others were all still in their red carpet finery, but amongst all of the people it was a struggle to see the dresses in the selfie. Fitting in with the theme of ‘Fashion is Art’, Gracie’s gold Chanel dress was inspired by The Woman in Gold, a 1907 portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I by Gustav Klimt. Most of it was covered by the no smoking sign in the mirror.

Similarly, Margot Robbie’s champagne dress, which was also by Chanel and reportedly took 761 hours to make, was covered by all the people. Only a tiny hint of Ayo Edebiri’s white dress was visible.

The mirror selfie was strikingly similar to one taken by Kylie Jenner in 2017. The youngest of the Kardashian-Jenner clan took the photo surrounded by her sisters and fellow stars. The theme of the night was a nod to Japanese designer Rei Kawakubo and Comme des Garcons, entitled ‘Art of the In-Between’. Kylie wore a fringed Versace look, paired with a blonde wig.

She was joined by Kendall Jenner, who was leaning on rapper A$AP Rocky, Kim Kardashian, Paris Jackson, model Lily Aldridge, Moonlight actor Ashton Sanders, model Luka Sabbat and Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs.

Stars often take pictures in the gender neutral bathrooms as this is one of the few places were the Met Gala’s social media ban isn’t strictly enforced. Over the years, several other celebs have taken similar pictures, including Ashley Graham, Hailey Bieber, Cara Delevign and Bella Hadid.

Anna Wintour is unlikely to appear in any such photo though, as she has her own private bathroom. The toilet is designated for her use only and a security guard reportedly stands watch over it.

This year, there were several celebrities who were also very unlikely to make an appearance in the bathroom selfies, as they didn’t even go to the event. Among those snubbing the event was Timothee Chalamet, who opted to attend a Knicks game instead.

Timothee wasn’t the only A-lister missing. Ariana Grande, Harry Styles, Olivia Rodrigo and Demi Lovato all missed the event, reportedly to focus on their upcoming tours and albums.

Callum Turner, Dua Lipa and Sydney Sweeney also seemed to pick their own holidays over the gala as well, as the couple headed to Copenhagen and Euphoria star Sydney was in Australia. Sydney’s co-star Zendaya also sat out the gala after being the person to watch for years.

Likewise, Bella Hadid, Taraji P. Henson, Lisa Ann Walter all skipped the event because of Jeff Bezos’ involvement. The Amazon founder and his wife, Lauren Sanchez, were the lead sponsor and honorary co-chairs. All three women seemed to avoid the event as they did not agree with attending in light of Bezos’ involvement with ICE.
