Met Gala is not only the biggest fashion event, but it is also one of the biggest fundraisers of all time, and it takes place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City every year. This year, the theme of the event was ‘Costume Art’ and the dress code was ‘Fashion is Art’. Celebrities showcased the best of the outfits that were perfectly aligned with the theme.

With Beyonce’s crystal-encrusted skeleton dress, Anne Hathaway’s gorgeous hand-painted dress, which was inspired by John Keats’ poem, Ode To A Gracian Urn, and Sabrina Carpenter’s LBD made with reference to the 1884 film, Sabrina, the red carpet of the Met Gala 2026 was something that kept fashion junkies stuck to the screens to just be in awe of the actors and actresses.

Undoubtedly, they pulled off the styles just perfectly, as did the designers, who left no stone unturned to shape fashion in a way that not only aligned with the theme of the Met Gala but also spread surrealism. One such gorgeous outfit from the Met Gala was Eileen Gu’s bubble/Airo dress.

The history behind Eileen Gu’s bubble dress and how the bubbles were floating around her

The model walked down the red carpet, spreading pure surrealism. It was a minidress, atop which there were 15,000 hand-formed glass bubbles. The neckline was transparent, and beneath it, there was a tulle outline.

Eileen Gu’s dress was simply surreal, and, according to the model, it took the craftsman 2,500 hours to make it. As she walked down the red carpet, the entire place was filled with bubbles, which made people wonder how the dress was progressing. Speaking about the dress, the model, who bagged two silvers and a gold at the 2026 Winter Olympics, said:

“I have 15,000 glass bubbles on me. It took 2,550 hours to make. There’s technology under the dress that enables reality to kind of come together with art. It’s a play on surrealism, it’s a play on movement, it’s a play on nature, on fun, on whimsy.”

To mention, the dress was the creation of Iris van Herpen. Taking to her IG handle, the Dutch fashion designer Iris van Herpen shared that there was a hidden microprocessor inside the dress, which was responsible for releasing pressurised gas and bubbles, and that the bubbles were controlled by a digital screen. Sharing more about the dress, the Dutch fashion designer, who is known for her tech couture, said:

“Hidden within the garment, microprocessors precisely coordinate the release of pressured gas and bubbles, sequenced through a dedicated digital interface and calibrated to operate autonomously. 15 000 hand-formed iridescent glass bubbles are individually bonded in place with UV light, releasing constellations of floating bubbles that drift into the air. No CGi or AI is used for this video.”

The dress has been named the ‘Airo’ dress, and it’s only apt, for that matter. She opted for a sheen makeup look and tied up her hair, letting strands of hair accentuate her facial structure.
