Fashion’s biggest and most theatrical night of the year is set for a surprisingly grounded makeover. After cancelling its previously announced retrospective dedicated to British designer John Galliano amid widespread criticism over his past antisemitic remarks, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York has unveiled a new vision for its Spring 2027 Costume Institute exhibition. Titled extraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday, the showcase will examine the creative possibilities of everyday clothing and commonplace materials.
Mark your calendars: the 2027 Met Gala will take place on Monday, May 3, following its traditional first-Monday-in-May schedule. The accompanying public exhibition will open on May 9, 2027, and run until January 9, 2028. Moving away from historical retrospectives and grand fashion statements, the showcase will turn its discerning lens towards familiar garments and humble materials, examining how designers use craft, construction and experimentation to give everyday staples a new identity.
Organised by Andrew Bolton, Curator in Charge of the Costume Institute, with the assistance of Stephanie Kramer and Emily Mushaben, the exhibition will bring together pieces from the institute’s collection, alongside key loans and new acquisitions. Among the highlights are Charles James’ 1930s eiderdown puffer jacket, Norma Kamali’s iconic sleeping bag coat and Matthieu Blazy’s trompe l’oeil leather denim designed for Bottega Veneta.

Reflecting on the philosophy behind the exhibition, Bolton observed, “The ordinary is never quite as simple as it appears.” He explained how everyday garments can hold traces of a person’s life, including their habits, memories and emotional attachments. A pair of jeans, a white shirt or a sweatshirt, he noted, can carry personal meaning shaped by the experiences of the person wearing it.
While the celebrity co-chairs and the official dress code for the 2027 Met Gala are yet to be announced, the exhibition’s theme offers plenty of room for sartorial interpretation. From avant-garde takes on classic white tees and denim to sculptural hoodies and inventive uses of everyday materials, the showcase promises to explore the space between routine utility and high-fashion artistry. Whether the red carpet follows the exhibition’s theme remains to be seen, but the concept opens up an intriguing new creative direction for fashion’s most-watched night.
