Michelle and Thomas met for the first time in 2018, when the FX series, Fosse/Verdon, began filming. For those unaware, in the mini-series, Michelle plays the role of a Tony Award-winning dancer, ‘Gwen Verdon,’ opposite Sam Rockwell’s character, a choreographer named ‘Bob Fosse.’ Meanwhile, Thomas worked on the show as one of the executive producers and even directed 5 of the 8 episodes in the mini-series.

For those unaware, Michelle Williams was previously married to Phil Elverum. However, their marriage lasted less than a year as they had already split by the beginning of 2019. Shortly after their split, on December 30, 2019, Michelle was seen with Thomas shopping for baby clothes at a maternity store in London. Reportedly, this is where Kate was filming for the movie, Venom: Let There Be Carnage. According to the outlet, it was Michelle’s daughter, Matilda, who “played matchmaker” for the two. A few days after their engagement news became public, Michelle was seen sporting her engagement ring while she arrived at JFK International Airport in New York City.

On January 5, 2020, Michelle and Thomas made their red carpet debut as a couple at the 2020 Golden Globe Awards. During the ceremony, Michelle won the award for best performance by an actress in a mini-series or a television film for her role in Fosse/Verdon. While giving her acceptance speech, Michelle spoke out about women’s right to choose and urged women to vote “in your self-interest.” At the end of her speech, the actress gave a sweet shoutout to her daughter and fiance, saying, “Tommy and Matilda, I can’t wait to come home to you.”

In March 2020, while Thomas was out with his now-wife, Michelle, he was seen wearing what looked like a wedding band. This immediately led fans to think that the two had tied the knot in secret. Two months later, in June 2020, it was revealed that the couple had welcomed their first child together. For the unversed, the birth of their son made Thomas a first-time father. Two years after this, Michelle revealed their son’s name for the first time as Hart during her May 2022 interview with Variety.

In the same 2022 interview where Michelle revealed Hart’s name for the same time, she shared that she and Thomas were expecting their second child. According to reports, the duo welcomed their second child in November 2022. At the time, Michelle was seen out on a stroll with her now-husband, Thomas, while carrying their newborn. 

Michelle Williams and Thomas Kail welcomed their third child via surrogacy 

Last year, Michelle and Thomas welcomed their third child together via surrogacy, as revealed by a source to People in April 2025. Reportedly, the news came after the couple were spotted taking a walk in their neighbourhood with their family. The source told the outlet:

“They couldn’t be happier to expand their family, and Matilda has been doting on her younger siblings.”
