Miles Owen steps in to help his mum, Amanda, with painting at their new family home at Anty John’s.
Amanda Owen’s son Miles suffered a near-fatal health emergency which left Amanda terrified.
Yorkshire Shepherdess Amanda Owen is back on screens with Clive in a new series of Our Farm Next Door: Amanda, Clive and the Kids, which delves into the family’s hectic lives as they renovate their farmhouse at Anty John’s. In the first episode, the winter weather has turned Ravenseat into a wonderland for the children, leaving full-time farmer Miles, 19, to help his mum Amanda Owen with the renovations.
While the teenager is passionate about farming, having assisted his parents in restoring their derelict 200-year-old farmhouse, he has been battling a health condition. On a number of occasions, he has been rushed to hospital after suffering terrifying health scares. Here is all you need to know about Miles and his health condition.
Miles Owen has Type 1 diabetes, which can sometimes lead to Diabetic ketoacidosis – a potentially life-threatening acute complication. An instalment of Reuben Owen: Life in the Dales, featured devastating footage of one of Miles’ episodes, with Miles and the family admitting on Instagram the particular instalment was “a challenging one”.
The caption, from back in June 2025, read: “It has taken until now to share what happened in December 2022 when there was a big medical emergency on the farm. Miles @milesowen86 wanted to share what happened to him to hopefully raise awareness of Type 1 diabetes and Diabetic ketoacidosis, which is a potentially life-threatening acute complication.
“Do tune in at 8pm on Channel 5 for an uplifting glimpse of how in difficult circumstances and locations individuals can change the narrative of a story and save lives.” The photos showed paramedics placing Miles on a drip before carrying him on a stretcher to an air ambulance.
Fans flocked to the comments to share their appreciation for the family highlighting such conditions, with one saying: “Thank you for talking about it. Our son was diagnosed over a year ago and we have just watched this episode tonight. It’s so important for representation- and especially for a farming mad 7 year old in the Dales x”
In June this year, Amanda and Miles took to Instagram again to share another episode Miles had, with Amanda saying in the caption: “It’s been a hard few days but we’re all here to tell the tale. I’m super proud of you @milesowen86.” In the video, Amanda said: “Look who I’ve got here,” as she pointed happily to her son. “He’s been away, haven’t you Miles?”
Miles explained: “Yeah, I’ve been at the hospital, quite poorly the past day or two.” Amanda went on to explain how he had “been a little bit ill, well quite a lot ill actually”, sharing how he had needed an ambulance. She revealed the incident was to do with her son’s diabetes, but she was glad he was back home and he was “feeling much better”.
“You are feeling better, you are looking better,” Amanda observed. “And the people, weren’t they amazing?” Miles said he could not thank the NHS staff who helped him enough, and he was “glad to be back”. “I’m happy to say everyone is safe and sound, and I’m really proud of you,” she concluded, leaving Miles with a big smile.
Following the 2025 incident, Miles had to be airlifted to James Cook Hospital from the Yorkshire Dales farm which was a two-hour drive away. Reunited with the air ambulance service crew, Ms Own fought back tears as she thanked them. Speaking to Miles, the paramedic had said: “With the rural nature of where you live, things could have been very different for you. It could have been a different outcome.”
Our Farm Next Door: Amanda, Clive and the Kids airs on More4 on October 5 at 9pm
