Thoothukudi:The investments attracted to Tamil Nadu through Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s recent London visit will generate new employment opportunities and provide a major boost to the industrial sector, said MSME minister P. Mathan Raja.
The minister, who presided over a vendor development programme for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) organised by the MSME department at a private hotel here on Friday, said the initiative was aimed at helping entrepreneurs from Thoothukudi and southern Tamil Nadu expand their markets and establish business linkages with major industries and public sector undertakings.
The programme was said to have the objective of providing MSMEs in the southern districts the opportunities to establish business linkages with NTPL, BHEL, Heavy Water Plant, Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant, V.O. Chidambaranar Port, Zirconium Complex and NPCIL, among other major industrial and public sector establishments.
The participating MSMEs have been given details of vendor registration, tendering and procurement procedures followed by large industrial establishments, besides opportunities to supply spare parts and various services and introduce their products to major companies.
Speaking to mediapersons later, Mathan Raja said the Rs. 13,500 crore investments attracted to Tamil Nadu through the Chief Minister’s recent London visit were expected to create employment opportunities for around 10,000 people. It will also open up new business opportunities for the MSME sector, he hoped.
The minister said 18 vendor development programmes had been planned across Tamil Nadu and the Thoothukudi event was the 13th. Similar programmes will continue to be conducted in all districts, he said.
Stating that an additional Rs. 280 crore had been allocated this year for providing capital subsidy to MSMEs, Mathan Raja said the total allocation for the MSME sector has been increased to around Rs. 600 crore in the current year. The enhanced allocation was expected to encourage further industrial growth in the state, he said.
He noted that steps were being taken to establish a space research centre at Alikkulam, in Thoothukudi district.
