Michael Douglas lifts the lid on a heated exchange with Hollywood star, Julia Roberts, at a Golden Globes party in 1990 in his new memoir, One Helluva Ride
Michael Douglas has made a bombshell admission about an attack on Hollywood legend, Julia Roberts, in his jaw-dropping new book.
The veteran actor, 82, doesn’t hold back in his memoir, One Helluva Ride, which recounts his rise to stardom during the height of his addiction to drink and drugs.
As the son of acting royalty – Kirk Douglas – Michael worked with a whole host of stars, including Julia. In 1990, the actor produced the film, Flatliners, which the actress starred in with then-fiancé Kiefer Sutherland. However, during a Golden Globes party held while they were shooting the horror flick, Michael admitted to threatening the Pretty Woman star, now 58, in a drunken rage after he claimed she had her arms around his son, Cameron, who was then 13.
Michael recalls: “While we were shooting the film, there was a Golden Globes party. I was there for Wall Street, and Julia was there for Mystic Pizza. She was dating Kiefer Sutherland and brought him to an after-party. I took Cameron, who was around thirteen. We were at the bar, and Julia had her arm around my son, kind of nuzzling him. To me, in that moment, he looked stunned… but I was pretty drunk.
“I told her: ‘Take your hands off my son and take that Golden Globe and stick it where the sun don’t shine’.”
The Game star claims he thought his son looked “stunned” by Julia’s affection, however he admits his judgment was probably clouded.
The unfortunate incident led to a call from Michael’s Flatliners producing partner, and, as the dad-of-three put it: “I’d crossed a line with the most in-demand young actress in Hollywood.”
Admitting his actions soured his relationship with the Erin Brockovich star, the star added: “I sent Julia roses with an apology for my behaviour, and then back in the production office, I apologised to her and Kiefer in person.
“Luckily, they forgave me enough to get through that and finish the picture. I remained friends with Kiefer. Julia, not so much.”
One Helluva Ride is a serious page-turner charting the life and career of Hollywood legend Michael with plenty of new revelations for film fans.
On the book’s sleeve he writes: “I spent a significant portion of my career playing some version of the modern, flawed, American male. You’ll see from these pages that it wasn’t exactly a stretch for me.”
Now 82, Michael, who is twice married and has beaten cancer, is still one of the most famous faces in Tinseltown, starring in movies including Fatal Attraction, Basic Instinct, Falling Down and Behind the Candelabra.
