HYDERABAD: An agitated motorist set his vehicle ablaze when asked to produce documents during police checks at Falaknuma.
The incident occurred on Chesma Road, Falaknuma, where police were conducting checks between 8 pm and 11 pm. Around 10.45 pm, a motorist not wearing a helmet was stopped for routine checks. He entered into an argument with the area sub‑inspector and began abusing him when asked to produce relevant documents, a police officer said.
Despite repeated requests to follow rules and produce the documents, the motorist grew agitated, pushed constables aside, unplugged the petrol pipe, lit a lighter from his pocket and set the bike ablaze, said Falaknuma division ACP M.A. Javeed.
Passersby along with police staff managed to extinguish the fire, though the vehicle was partially gutted, Javeed added.
“We are probing the case. We will verify the documents of the vehicle and the reasons why the motorist, identified as Md Azam, took such an extreme step. Cases will be booked as per law,” the ACP said.
Azam, a resident of Falaknuma, has been detained for questioning and his bike seized.
On the instructions of Rajendranagar zone DCP S. Sreenivas, police across the zone were conducting routine checks on all vehicles, especially goods transport, in view of citizens’ security and safety, he added.
