Popular YouTube personality Ms. Rachel has made her feelings clear about three nursery rhymes she believes should be banned immediately over their “racist” history
Children’s entertainer, Ms Rachel, has said she believes three nursery rhymes should be banned immediately over their content. Ms. Rachel, whose real name is Rachel Griffin Accurso, is an American YouTuber, educator, and songwriter.
She became well loves and famous for her YouTube personality, Ms. Rachel, and has billions of views across hundreds of videos that engage toddlers and children. The videos focus on early language development, speech milestones, sign language, and gestures for toddlers.
Since becoming one of the most recognisable faces for children around the world, she has appeared on a number of podcasts and even makes makes her political stance on worldwide events, such as the ongoing conflict in the middle east, clear. Ms Rachel recently called out Ed Sheeran and threw her support behind Macklemore’s Free Palestine comment that saw him removed from Ed Sheeran’s LOOP Tour.
What nursery rhymes does Ms Rachel think should be banned?
More recently, she appeared on the SubwayTakes Podcast where she told interviewer, Kareem Rahma, that she believed three nursery rhymes needed to be banned immediately.
She said: “So the ones that really need to be retired are racist ones. Jimmy Crack Corn, Oh! Susanna, Eeny, meeny, miny, moe.”
Jimmy Crack Corn is a very divisive nursery rhyme that originated from the 1840s and mocks enslaved African Americans. Oh! Susanna also comes from the same era of 19th-century blackface minstrel shows.
While eeny, meeny, miny, moe is divisive as older and widely used historical versions of the children’s counting-out rhyme contained an offensive racial slur in place of the modern word “tiger”.
Ms Rachel said: “People are like, “What will we do? What will we do?” when I’m like, you know how many wonderful nursery rhymes and kids’ songs exist? And we can make new ones.”
Ms Rachel believes fourth nursery rhyme should be ‘changed’
The kids entertainer also made her feelings clear on the three little kittens nursery rhyme, which is muhc more common in the UK.
She said: “Some nursery rhymes and kids’ songs need to be retired . Some I think can be changed . Like, I feel like “The Three Little Kittens” should not be denied the pie .”
Kareem questioned: “How does that one go? and Ms Rachel said: “Three little kittens, they lost their mittens, and they began to cry. And then, blah, blah, blah. And then the mum’s like, “You naughty kittens, you can’t have any pie.
“And I feel like she can give them some strategies for not losing the mittens all the time . So that one maybe change a little bit . I’m not super against that one. It’s like okay .”
People commented on a clip from the podcast on TikTok to share their thoughts on Ms Rachel’s opinion. One person said: “In “eenie meenie” in Ireland, at least where I’m from, the words were always “catch a tiger by the toe”. Imagine my shock when I found out what the actual lyrics were as an adult the “n” word wasn’t a thing where I grew up (back end of nowhere Ireland).”
A second person said: “I feel so seen for hating the three little kittens rhyme. She didn’t even mention the worst part, where the mom tells them to put on their mittens to eat the pie and then SCOLDS THEM FOR GETTING THEM DIRTY?? Genuinely always hated that rhyme even when I was a kid it.”
A third added: “I don’t have kids, so I’ve never actually heard Miss Rachel speak before… I now see why everyone loves her.”
