The sisters who were the first recorded UK case of twins with different dads have taken to a BBC Radio 4 show to talk publicly about how they found out for the first time
The sisters who are the UK’s first recorded case of twins with different fathers have shared how they found out about the extremely rare phenomenon, saying “we’re miracles”.
In a new series of BBC Radio 4’s The Gift, Michelle and Lavinia Osbourne told Jenny Kleeman about why they chose to have DNA tests confirming they were half sisters, despite being twins. The two women are among fewer than 20 global cases of heteropaternal superfecundation. The biological process occurs when multiple eggs are released within the same menstrual cycle, which are then fertilised by sperm from different men. Michelle and Lavinia are the first recorded case of this happening in the UK.

Over two episodes of The Gift’s third series, Michelle and Lavinia shared that they took at home DNA tests because they wanted to address Michelle’s “deep down doubts” about whether she was related to the man she thought was her father, James. She said: “I saw this picture and just thought, you don’t even look anything like me…There’s no similarity there… So I bought myself a kit.”
The results of the test arrived on the same day the women’s mother died – 14 February 2022. It revealed that James was not Michelle’s father, and instead her father was a man called Alex. Alex was the brother of a woman Michelle’s mother had been friends with. After contacting some of Alex’s family, Michelle learned he had battled alcoholism and drug addiction, leaving him homeless.
She was also able to meet a new cousin, and showed photographs of her newly family to Lavinia, who thought Alex must be her father too. But when she saw those pictures, Lavinia felt the same way Michelle had looking at photos of James. So she got her own DNA test, as she “just wanted confirmation”.
When she got her results, Lavinia saw one thing she expected – that James was not her father – and one thing she didn’t – that neither was Alex. While Lavinia was not initially interested in knowing who her father was, Michelle was determined to get answers. Michelle was able to track down Arthur, who, according to Lavinia, was “a little bit nervous” but had “an exuberant character, like me”.
Lavinia and Arthur have now been seeing each other several times a month. Lavinia said: “I feel like I’ve found a place to belong, and that place is with my dad.”
Lavinia and Michelle don’t know if their mother knew her children had different fathers, but Arthur implied she at least knew that he fathered one of them, as she went to him after finding out she was pregnant.
Reflecting on the family secret they had discovered, Lavinia said: “The fact that Michelle and I survived whatever that process was and are here to tell the tale – we’re miracles. We’re always going to have a closeness that can’t be broken.”
Michelle added: “I think Lavinia and I have both equally gained more than we could ever, ever have thought of or conceived, ever. I myself don’t feel like I’ve lost anything”, adding “She’s my twin sister. Nothing takes away from that.”
The twins’ episode of The Gift was dedicated to their mother and the difficult life she led. Michelle explained that her mother was born in Jamaica and came to England when she was five. She added that her mum was “in and out of foster care” because it “wasn’t safe for her to be at home” with her abusive stepfather.
When asking that the show be dedicated to their mum, Lavinia said: “We could have maybe found our fathers and had more clarity about who we were earlier in life. But I forgive my mum for everything.”
BBC Radio 4’s The Gift explores the extraordinary truths that can emerge when people take at-home DNA tests like Ancestry, MyHeritage and 23andMe. Michelle and Lavinia’s story unfolds over the first two episodes of the series, which is available in full on BBC Sounds now.
