Actress Nadia Farès has died aged 57 after being found unconscious in a gym swimming pool. The French star, best known for starring in psychological thriller, The Crimson Rivers, as well as the French version of Brit hit, Luther, leaves behind two daughters, who announced her death on Friday.
Revealing that their mum had tragically drowned at a luxury sports club in Paris, they wrote: “It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of Nadia Farès this Friday. France has lost a great artist, but for us, it is above all a mother we have just lost.”
The Moroccan-born actress had been doing laps of the pool last weekend when she suddenly lost consciousness. Minutes later, another swimmer rushed to help her and tired to revive her through CPR. Nadia was rushed to Pitie-Salpetriere hospital and placed in a medically induced coma, until she suffered a cardiac arrest and sadly died.
The star had been battling health issues of which she spoke about candidly. Nadia revealed in 2007 that she had undergone brain surgery for an aneurysm in 2007 and had three heart operations within four years.
Her family moved to France from Morocco in 1968 when she was a child. She gained her first TV roles in the early 90s before landing a part in the popular Elles n’oublient jamais (They Never Forget). In the thriller, Nadia plays the young mistress of a married man, who becomes convinced she is having an affair.
She went on to form a partnership with director Bernie Bonvoisin, who she made three films with after starring his 1997 comedy Les Demons de Jesus.
However, her defining role came in Mathieu Kassovitz’s Les Rivières pourpres (The Crimson Rivers), in which she starred alongside French icon Jean Reno. She plays twin sisters Fanny Fereira and Judith Herault, and was hailed for her captivating screen presence.
Nadia enjoyed a long career in TV and cinema having first starred on small screens in France in 1990. She then went on to star in movies, alongside Hollywood greats such as Mel Gibson, Jason Statham and Jet Li.
She also starred as Vanessa d’Abrantes in the Netflix series Marseille and made her last appearance on screens in 2025 film, Toujours.
The actress also had plans to direct her first film later this year. She told Gala magazine in January: “Through hard work, questioning and stubbornness, I found a great team, we are working together on an action comedy with Studios TF1.”
In her personal life, Nadia met producer Steve Chasman and they married in 2002 before welcoming two daughters. However, the couple separated four years ago and she returned to live in France.
