Nagasaki marked the 81st anniversary of the U.S. atomic bombing on August 9 with a memorial ceremony near the hypocenter, where Mayor Shiro Suzuki declared nuclear weapons an “absolute evil” and called on the Japanese government to uphold its Three Non-Nuclear Principles.
The Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Victims Memorial Peace Prayer Ceremony was held at Peace Park in Matsuyama-machi, Nagasaki, close to the site of the 1945 bombing.
In his Peace Declaration, Suzuki urged the government to firmly maintain Japan’s Three Non-Nuclear Principles and shift toward a security policy that does not rely on nuclear weapons.
Suzuki also warned that the danger of nuclear war is increasing in the international community.
People in Nagasaki and elsewhere renewed their determination to ensure that Nagasaki remains the last place ever to suffer an atomic bombing.
