Naked Eyes founder Peter Byrne, the musician behind the hit song Always Something There to Remind Me, has died after having battled a ‘brief illness’
Peter Byrne, the founder of Naked Eyes, has died. A spokesperson for the band confirmed that the late musician, who died aged 74, had died “peacefully after a brief illness”.
Peter died on September 14 in Los Angeles. No cause of death has been confirmed yet. A statement released on their website reads: “Peter Byrne, singer and songwriter for the band Naked Eyes, died peacefully in Los Angeles, California, on Monday, September 14, after a brief illness.
“A private service will be held for the family. For those wishing to pay their respects, please support his music and condolences can be posted below in the comment section of this blog post.”
Peter and Rob Fisher, who became friends at college, formed the band in Bath in 1982 with their debut album. Burning Bridges, being released the following year.
The record, which was self-titled across the United States and Canada, secured Number 32 on the Billboard 200 at the time of its release. But it was a cover of Burt Bacharach and Hal David’s “Always Something There to Remind Me,” which saw the band achieve commercial success, peaking at Number 8.
Byrne and Fisher went on to release Fuel for the Fire just a year later, securing them a Top 40 track with (What) in the Name of Love. Peter was also responsible for backing vocals on Stevie Wonder’s track Part-Time Lover. However, the group disbanded just two years after their launch.
It was then that Peter embarked on a solo album, The Real Illusion. But by 2005, Peter had revived the band as a live act, with their independent album, Fumbling with the Covers, being released in 2007, consisting of covers and Naked Eyes hits.
The following year, the group hit the road across America alongside The Human League, Belinda Carlisle and ABC. Following the death of Fisher in 1999, after cancer surgery, Peter continued writing music for both film and television, as well as for the Olsen Twins.
Prior to Naked Eyes, they were initially part of the band Neon, alongside Tears for Fears’ Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith. “Rest Easy Peter Byrne,” said one fan.
A second added: “F**k dude, this one hurts. He will be missed,” said a second. While a third heartbroken fan penned: “Peter Byrne of Naked Eyes, gone too soon at the age of 74.” Another typed: “I loved listening to Always Something There to Remind Me. RIP Peter Byrne.”
Another commented: “Rest in peace, Peter Byrne. What an awesome song and big part of the 80’s this was. Promises Promises too.”
Peter is survived by his siblings, Eileen, Sandy, Carol and Steve, as well as his ex-wife Elena and his three children, Merlin, Dylan and Chloe.
