Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance from her Tucson home continues to raise questions even three months after the incident. Ed Smart urges people to focus on verified facts

Ed Smart, the father of a kidnapped survivor, Elizabeth Smart, recently opened up about the potential consequences of conspiracy theories around Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance. He sat down for an interview with News Nation and pointed out, based on his family’s experience, that people should stick to verified facts. In turn, he urged people to avoid assumptions. In particular, he mentioned that the investigators had already looked into Nancy’s immediate family, including Annie Guthrie and Tommaso Cioni. Since they cleared them, he believes dragging the family into the case will serve no purpose other than increasing pain in a traumatic situation. In his words:

“I think that it’s really important to, one, not go into conspiracy theories. I don’t think there’s much value in that. Of course, the Guthries have been looked at. They have supposedly been cleared. So that should no longer really be out there in the public, regardless of whether people are searching around the house or not.”

Ed Smart also pointed out that in many investigations, the police often withhold certain information from the public for strategic reasons. According to him, the public may not know everything the investigators have, such as some DNA evidence or surveillance leads. He explained that it is also important to keep Nancy’s story in the public eye. Ed recalled how constant media attention was helping in his daughter, Elizabeth’s case. He mentioned that it would increase the chances that someone who knows something would come forward and speak.

Why are Annie Guthrie and Tommaso Cioni linked to Nancy Guthrie’s case?

Speculation about Nancy Guthrie’s eldest daughter, Annie Guthrie, and Tommaso Cioni began when Ashleigh Banfield alleged that the latter could be a prime suspect in the case. Although she highlighted that it was an assumption, the fact that the couple were the last people to see Nancy before her disappearance increased speculation. Authorities revealed that Nancy had dinner with Annie and Tommaso on January 31, 2026. Later, Tommaso drove her home safely around 9:30 p.m. The next morning, the 84-year-old went missing. However, the officials later clarified that the couple were not suspects in the case. Still, speculation about them continues.

Ed Smart’s comments on the Nancy Guthrie missing case are important because his family dealt with one of America’s most high-profile abduction cases in 2002. His daughter, Elizabeth Smart, was also abducted from her bedroom at the age of 14 in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was abducted by Brian David Mitchell and held captive for nine months before she was rescued in 2003. Eventually, Elizabeth was recognised by some people as she walked with her captors, which led to her rescue. Therefore, Ed believes that public recognition and more visibility could also play an important role in Nancy Guthrie’s case. Sharing his experience, Ed said:

“I think it’s important to keep information coming. Savannah and the family—more information about their mother. That was one thing that our family continually tried to do: to keep new information coming out. I think keeping Nancy’s face out there, more information about Nancy, is really key,”
