Nellore: Municipal administration minister P. Narayana on Sunday lashed out at Opposition leaders for what he termed “baseless and politically motivated criticism” of development works in Nellore, while reviewing key projects during a tour of the city constituency.

He alleged that certain leaders were spreading misinformation on school development, canal modernisation and the city’s greening initiative without understanding the facts. “While we are strengthening infrastructure in government schools and creating better opportunities for poor students, some are resorting to unnecessary criticism for political mileage. People are closely observing and will give a fitting response,” he said.

Responding to allegations on the tree plantation drive, Narayana said no government funds had been utilised so far and that the initiative was being carried out entirely with voluntary support from friends and alumni. He advised critics to seek details through the Right to Information (RTI) Act instead of making “reckless statements”.

During the visit, the minister inspected modernisation works of the Gachhu Canal and Ramireddy Canal aimed at preventing urban flooding. He also reviewed the upgradation of DSR School being undertaken with ₹10 crore in CSR funds, and the construction of a ₹20 crore high school with a swimming pool on Wakf Board land at Parameswari Nagar.

He further examined the progress of a CC road being laid at a cost of ₹1.2 crore at Porlukkattu. Narayana said donors had come forward to support the modernisation of 15 government high schools in the city.

Local leaders, including Roop Kumar Yadav and Wakf Board chairman Abdul Aziz, supported the minister and said efforts to improve education for underprivileged students were being unfairly criticised.

Several civic representatives, including the city mayor and commissioner, were present during the visit.
