The 72nd National Film Awards ceremony took place at Ekta Nagar in Gujarat on Tuesday, September 22, with President Droupadi Murmu presenting the honours to the winners. The ceremony, held against the backdrop of the Statue of Unity, marked the first time in the modern run of the awards that the event was moved out of New Delhi. This year’s awards recognise films certified in 2024.
Kartik Aaryan and Mammootty shared the Best Actor award for their performances in Chandu Champion and Bramayugam, respectively. Yami Gautam was named Best Actress for Article 370, which also won Best Feature Film. Rajkumar Periasamy won Best Director for Amaran, while Sanjay Mishra took home Best Supporting Actor for Bhakshak. Randeep Hooda was honoured with the Best Debut Director award for Swatantrya Veer Savarkar.
Dhanush also had a notable outing at the awards. His directorial Raayan was named Best Tamil Film, while his performance in Captain Miller received a Special Mention.
The ceremony also saw some candid moments among the stars. Kartik Aaryan and Dhanush were seen seated together during the ceremony, sharing a moment as they attended the event. Yami Gautam arrived alongside her husband, filmmaker Aditya Dhar, who produced Article 370. The couple were also seen interacting with Mammootty at the venue.
Mammootty, meanwhile, received a standing ovation as he accepted his Best Actor honour for Bramayugam. The award marks his fourth National Film Award for Best Actor. Veteran actor Anant Nag was also honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2024, recognising his contribution to Indian cinema across a career spanning more than five decades.
