As the season gets underway, the Warriors are still attempting to figure out how to move forward with center Kristaps Porzingis. Porzingis hasn’t suited up for the Warriors this season as he’s dealing with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), and the NBA Champion big man has been mentioned in trade rumors around the association.

Per ClutchPoints Senior NBA reporter Brett Siegel, the Warriors contacted the Milwaukee Bucks about a Porzingis trade.

“The Warriors did recently contact the Bucks about a potential Porzingis trade, according to Sam Amick of The Athletic, yet it’s unknown at this time whether Golden State was interested in Turner or a different player. Since Turner makes $26.5 million this season, the Warriors would need to send out an additional $6.6 million to match salaries in this hypothetical scenario,” Siegel reported.

The Stein Line’s Jake Fischer reports that the Warriors are looking to make a splashy trade in season but view their options differently than many believe.

“To give you a glimpse into how Golden State views its options: Sources say that the Warriors do not have Milwaukee’s Myles Turner high on their list of potential targets. Golden State did show past interest in Turner when he was making less than $20 million annually in Indiana, but Turner’s $26 million salary on a contract that runs through the 2028-29 season does not hold the same appeal. Golden State, sources say, would be seeking draft capital or other forms of incentive from the Bucks to consider a deal for Turner now.”

Fischer added that the Warriors have also reached out to the Bulls, with Jalen Smith as a possible short-term option.

“The Warriors have called Chicago, sources say, because the Bulls theoretically offer a potential short-term answer: Jalen Smith. The 26-year-old has some floor-spacing ability and is earning roughly half of what Porzingis is making this season at $9.4 million on the final season of a three-year, $27 million contract.”

Fischer said the Warriors’ interest in Chicago runs into a complication, since the NBA’s new lottery rules change what rebuilding teams want back in trades.

“Yet the issue for the Warriors in this particular scenario is that Chicago, like any rebuilding team across the next three seasons, has to factor in the league’s new lottery rules when surrendering any player who can help them stay competitive. Those teams no longer have the same incentive to pursue draft assets and financial flexibility in every deal when a bottom-three record reduces your chances of winning the lottery in May.”

He said that landscape could push Golden State’s timeline back to mid-December.

“It’s a tricky landscape. The Warriors know, as a result, that they might have to wait until mid-December, when more teams are open to considering trade proposals once the bulk of the past summer’s free agent signees become eligible to be moved, to find a workable solution.”
