Ncuti Gatwa is set to reunite with one of his Doctor Who co-stars for a rom-com centred around a two strangers meeting on the platform of a train station
Ncuti Gatwa is set to make a career change as he joins one of his Doctor Who co-stars for a rom-com about a meet-cute.
Gatwa, who played the Fifteenth Doctor, will reunite with Niamh-Marie Smith, who played Sylvia Trench in the Christmas Special, Joy To The World.
The two will come back together for short film Passing Through, which is about two strangers who meet on a train station platform in December.
The film has been billed as a “modern, queer take on a meet-cute”. Gatwa has come on board as executive producer, making his first shift from acting to being behind the camera.
Meanwhile, Smith will write, direct and star in the film. On Doctor Who, her character was one of many that the Doctor met as he passed through time in Joy To The World, and was trying to decide whether to send a letter to a lost lover.
She will act opposite Shetland star Gemma Laurie. Laurie played Rosemary Strachan, one of the Scottish show’s killers, and Wilma McCann in ITV’s The Long Shadow.
Smith and Gatwa aren’t the only Doctor Who alums to be involved with the film. Becky Rossmaur, who worked in the casting department, served as casting director for the short.
In a statement about the film, Gatwa said: “I had the pleasure of working with Níamh on Doctor Who and was blown away by her talent and insight. So, I’m overjoyed to be joining this project as EP and work with such fresh new talent.
“Passing Through is a beautiful script about human connection, grief and taking in the small pleasures of life. It’s really simple and beautifully layered at the same time and as soon as I read it my heart was warmed and I knew I wanted to be involved.”
Gatwa ended his tenure as the Doctor at the end of his second season. The final scene showed his Doctor regenerating into Billie Piper, but with the Christmas special cancelled and the show now out to tender, fans are unsure if this storyline has been quietly dropped.
Speaking to The Telegraph about leaving Doctor Who, Gatwa said: “I was tired and burnt out at the end of [season 2]. It was exhausting. But it was a magical time, magical. There was never an opportunity to recoup the energy – it’s just go, go, go.”
He shared that he “found it hard being away from home and family”, especially as he was spending seven days a week filming for eight months, after five years of on and off filming in Cardiff for Sex Education. He added: “I had to wrestle with myself – I fell in love with that show. I’ll miss it, but I was ready to move on.”
