New Delh: The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognisance of an alleged incident of public molestation, assault, forcible stopping and harassment of a teenage girl and her male companion in Bihar’s Jamui.
The statement came after media reported that a teenage boy and girl returning from coaching classes in Jamui were stopped by a group of men on evening of September 19. They were surrounded, questioned and subjected to assault and molestation before being allowed to leave. The video of the incident has since gone viral.
“The National Commission for Women has taken suo motu cognisance of an incident in Jamui district of Bihar involving alleged public molestation, assault, forcible stopping, and harassment of a teenage girl and her male companion,” the commission said in a post on X.
According to media reports and circulated videos, some individuals surrounded both of them at evening, grabbed and pulled the young woman, and behaved indecently with her, while also assaulting her companion, the NCW said.
NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has written to the Bihar Director General of Police (DGP), directing immediate registration of an FIR in the matter, identification and arrest of all accused.
The commission has directed that security, legal assistance, and psychological counselling be provided to the victims, as well as taking necessary legal action to stop further sharing of the objectionable video being circulated on social media, it said.
The NCW has sought a detailed Action Taken Report (ATR) within seven days.
“Any compromise on the dignity, safety, and privacy of women is unacceptable at any level,” the commission said.
