New Delhi: The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is likely to lose one Rajya Sabha seat in the biennial elections for 26 seats, while the Congress-led Opposition is expected to gain three, including one for the TVK of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Vijay Joseph. Polling will be held on June 26 in 10 states, including four in Andhra Pradesh.
The Election Commission of India on Friday announced polling for 26 seats, following the retirement or resignation of several members, including former prime minister H.D. Deve Gowda, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and party leader Digvijaya Singh, besides Union ministers Ravneet Singh and George Kurian between June 21 and July 19.
Of the 26 seats, the NDA holds 18, the Congress four, YSRC three and the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) one.
Based on current strengths, the NDA is projected to win 17 seats, the Congress five, the JMM two and the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam one.
In the 244-member Rajya Sabha, the NDA has 149 members, the Opposition 78 and non-aligned regional parties 17.
Elections will be held for four seats each in Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Karnataka; three each in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan; two in Jharkhand; and one each in Manipur, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram. One seat each in Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu will also go to polls.
The last date for filing nominations is June 8.
In a separate notification, the commission announced by-elections to fill vacancies caused by the resignation of Sunetra Pawar in Maharashtra and C.V. Shanmugam in Tamil Nadu after their election to state Assemblies.
The NDA is expected to retain the Maharashtra seat, while the Tamil Nadu seat is likely to go to the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam. The tenure of these seats will run till July 4, 2028 and June 29, 2028 respectively.
State-wise, the Telugu Desam is expected to win all four seats in Andhra Pradesh, while the BJP is likely to secure all four in Gujarat.
In Jharkhand, the JMM-Congress alliance is expected to win both seats, though the BJP may attempt to secure one through cross-voting.
In Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, the Congress is expected to win one seat each, while the BJP is likely to secure two seats in both states.
In Karnataka, the Congress is projected to win three seats and the BJP one.
In Rajasthan, where the BJP and Congress currently have five members each in the Rajya Sabha, the BJP is expected to win two of the three seats, while the Congress is likely to secure one, based on the present strength in the 200-member Assembly.
