Hyderabad: A 700-year-old Shiva temple built in the characteristic Kakatiya style on the outskirts of Sanigaram village in Nallabelli mandal of Warangal district is on the verge of collapse due to years of neglect, according to Dr. E. Sivanagi Reddy, CEO of the Pleach India Foundation.
Acting on information provided by Warangal-based historian Dr. Racharla Ganapati, Dr. Reddy inspected the temple and said the structure is in a severely dilapidated condition. The temple comprises a garbhalaya, ardhamandapa and a 16-pillared mahamandapa built on an elevated base, with ornamental doorframes and mouldings.
Describing its condition, he said the doorways had collapsed, roof slabs had fallen, pillars had been dislodged and the staircase had been damaged. In addition, vegetation has overgrown and obscured much of the structure.
The temple represents the signature architectural style of the Kakatiyas, particularly of the Ganapatideva period, he said.
Dr Reddy said Aravind Arya, secretary of Team of Research on Culture & Heritage (TORCH), had offered to undertake digital documentation of the temple as the first step towards its restoration.
