Jason Donovan’s beloved father Terence Donovan has died. The iconic Australian actor – who appeared in both Neighbours and Home Away – died in Melbourne over the weekend at the age of 90.
News emerged of Terence’s death by his son Jason who took to Instagram sharing the sad news with his fans and friends. In a message signed from himself and his brother Paul, he paid tribute to his “best friend”.
The statement read: “It is with great sadness but also a sense of celebration of a long, full life that myself and my brother Paul announce our father Terence died peacefully last night here in Melbourne.
“Obviously this is an extremely emotional time and we ask you to respect our privacy. We want to pay tribute to all the wonderful staff at Cabrini Hospital, Melbourne who looked after him in his final days.”
He added: “Our dad was a huge character. Larger than life. He was our best friend… Our world. We will desperately miss him but we take comfort knowing we were all here by his side in his final days. Knowing that he lived life to the max. Knowing that in life it’s either a daring adventure… or nothing at all! How lucky are we to have a dad like you.”
Terence’s career spanned almost seven decades after he began acting in the early 60s. A few of his memorable roles include the film Breaker Morant and The Man from Snowy River. And his TV credits include Homicide and the iconic Sons and Daughters. He also appeared in the show that made his son a global star, Neighbours.
Terence was born in London in October 1935 and later moved to Australia in the late 50s.
The much loved actor married TV presenter Sue McIntosh in 1965 but their marriage only lasted seven years. They shared Jason who was born in 1968.
Up until 2022, Terence was still acting as he made another appearance in Neighbours, reprising his role as Doug Willis.
Jason’s daughter Jemma Donovan has continued the family legacy appearing in Neighbours playing the character Harlow Robinson between 2019 and 2022.
In the Australian soap, Jason played the heartthrob Scott Robinson and his love for Kylie Minogue’s character Charlene, propelled his stardom making him one of the most sought after actors of his time.
Jemma has previously admitted that her dad became emotional after he discovered she had landed a role in Neighbours.
