Nepal’s 18-year-old Nima Rinji Sherpa has etched his name in mountaineering history by becoming the youngest climber to successfully summit all 14 peaks above 8,000 meters. His record-breaking achievement was confirmed on Wednesday after he reached the summit of Mount Shishapangma, which stands at 8,027 meters.
The expedition organizer, Seven Summit Treks, announced the milestone via Instagram, stating, “At the remarkable age of 18 years and 5 months, Nima Rinji Sherpa has made history.” He was accompanied by fellow climber Pasang Nurbu Sherpa, who also completed the challenge of climbing all 14 peaks. Nima reached the summit early in the morning at 6:05 AM local time in China.
Nima’s journey began in September 2022 when he first climbed Mount Manaslu (8,163m). Over the course of just two years and ten days, he achieved this extraordinary feat. His climbing record includes summits of notable peaks such as Mount Everest (8,848.86m) on May 24, 2023; Mount Lhotse (8,516m) on May 23, 2024; and K2 (8,611m) on July 27, 2023.
After waiting for permits from Chinese authorities, which were granted in September, Nima was able to make his final ascent. His impressive list of climbs also includes Mount Annapurna I (8,091m) without supplemental oxygen on April 12, 2024, and Mount Kanchenjunga (8,586m) on June 8, 2024.
In a heartfelt message shared on social media upon reaching his final summit, Nima dedicated his achievement to his project #SherpaPower. He expressed a desire to inspire younger generations of Sherpas to break free from traditional roles and recognize their potential as trailblazers in mountaineering.
Nima’s remarkable journey not only highlights his personal accomplishments but also serves as a tribute to the resilience and strength of the Sherpa community.
