Netflix has announced a Stranger Things spin-off prequel series almost a year after the smash-hit show ended, with Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure set for release in 2028
Stranger Things fans have been given an exciting surprise, with Netflix announcing a brand-new prequel series set decades before the events of the hit sci-fi drama.
Titled Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure, the new show is expected to arrive in 2028, with the streaming giant sharing an eerie first teaser on Friday, November 6.
The announcement was made to coincide with Stranger Things Day, which celebrates the fictional date when the events of the original series first began.
The short teaser offers little away about the storyline but hints at a mysterious new setting. It opens with a bicycle lying abandoned beside a vintage radio playing Sh-Boom by The Crew-Cuts, with the music interrupted by bursts of static.
The camera then moves towards a warning sign indicating that the area is restricted, before showing dark clouds gathering overhead. A date and location appear on screen: “April 19, 1955. Marion, Nevada.”
Moments later, lightning flashes across the sky, cutting through the clouds before the clip abruptly ends. Netflix accompanied the footage with the caption: “Before Hawkins, there was Marion. Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure. New series only on Netflix, 2028.”
Unlike the original show, which was set in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, the new series will take place in Marion, Nevada.
The story is set in 1955, several decades before the 1980s setting of Stranger Things. It will also take place before the events explored in the stage production Stranger Things: The First Shadow, which is set in Hawkins in 1959.
The award-winning play delves into the early life of Henry Creel and explores how he eventually becomes Vecna, the terrifying villain who threatens the characters in the television series.
The Duffer Brothers, Matt and Ross, are returning to the Stranger Things universe for the new project alongside writer Kate Trefry.
Speaking to Netflix’s Tudum, the brothers said: “We’ve been dreaming of Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure for many years now, and to see it become a reality is surreal and exhilarating.
“It’s Stranger Things, but also thrillingly fresh, with a new setting, new heroes and villains, and new… Actually, we’re not allowed to say any more.
“Now, on to casting. In the meantime – watch the skies, nerds!”
Trefry, who will serve as showrunner, co-creator and writer, also shared her excitement about bringing the next chapter of the franchise to life.
She said: “It’s an insane honour and privilege to be bringing this new chapter of Stranger Things to life.”
She added: “With the support of Netflix and (production company) 21 Laps, we have had the time of our lives returning to all the horror, wonder and mystery of the flagship, while also telling a wholly new story, one we hope will blow your minds and break your hearts all over again.
“There are so many more mysteries to explore. Welcome to Other Worlds.”
Stranger Things first landed on Netflix in 2016 and quickly became one of the platform’s biggest global hits, launching the careers of several of its young stars.
Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Sadie Sink, Maya Hawke and Joe Keery were among the cast members who became household names, while David Harbour, Winona Ryder and Natalia Dyer also starred in the series.
The show follows a group of friends who uncover a series of supernatural mysteries linked to an alternate dimension known as the Upside Down.
After a decade on screen, the original series reached its emotional conclusion with a two-hour finale released in January 2026.
However, the Stranger Things universe is continuing to expand, with the animated spin-off Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 also forming part of the franchise.
Further details about the new prequel, including its cast and storyline, are yet to be revealed.
