Netflix ‘Apex’ Ending Explained, How Does ‘Sasha’ Survives The Chase From A Serial Killer? Find Out

Netflix’s latest survival thriller, Apex, has become the new topic of discussion among movie lovers. It has not just earned praise for its gritty action but also for its emotional ending, which left viewers wanting more. The film starring Charlize Theron is a mix of physical survival and deep emotional arcs. Although the film’s trailer hinted at a classic cat-and-mouse race in the wilderness, the film makes it clear that there is more to her journey. It is not only about saving herself from a serial killer, but also about dealing with grief to find the willingness to live again. 

What is Apex all about? 

Apex starts with the story focusing on ‘Sasha’ and her husband, ‘Tommy’ (Eric Bana). The couple go on a climbing trip for an adventure. But things soon turn chaotic when the intense weather conditions cause ‘Tommy’ to slip during the climb. In one of the most emotional moments of the film, ‘Sasha’ has to make the difficult decision of cutting the rope, which sends ‘Tommy’ to die. In turn, the emotional moment leaves her grief-stricken, creating a deeply emotional moment in the film. 

The story quickly turns to five months later, where ‘Sasha’ is seen walking into the Australian wilderness with ‘Tommy’s ashes. She tries to find some peace and closure from the guilt, which has consumed her for months. Although it is meant to be a quiet solo trip, the story takes another turn when she meets Ben (Taron Egerton). 

Initially, ‘Ben’ seems to be a local guide who helps ‘Sasha’. He is calm, friendly and knowledgeable about the local environment. But eventually it is revealed that ‘Ben’ is a serial killer who hunts people for fun. The revelation shifts the film’s tone from an emotional drama to a full-blown survival thriller, where ‘Sasha’ learns she might be ‘Ben’s’ next target. 

How does ‘Sasha’ save herself from ‘Ben’? 

‘Ben’ is not just another serial killer. He does not directly go to kill his victim. Instead, he plays a twisted game where he gives ‘Sasha’ a head start before hunting her in the jungle with a crossbow. ‘Ben’ seeks pleasure in both the chase and the kill. Therefore, ‘Sasha’ runs, hides and uses every possible way to stay alive. But the whole bid to survive is more than just saving herself from ‘Ben’. The chase to survive makes ‘Sasha’ regain the strength she lost after ‘Tommy’s’ death.

When the story begins to conclude, ‘Sasha’ and ‘Ben’ reach a cliffside for their final confrontation. Incidentally, it is a similar situation to when ‘Tommy’ died that brings ‘Sasha’ face-to-face with her trauma. This time, instead of freezing or running, ‘Sasha’ uses her climbing skills to trap ‘Beb’. She uses ropes and climbing equipment to put him in a weak position as ‘Tommy’. So, ‘Ben’ ends up losing his balance and falls, marking his death as ‘Tommy’s’ fate. Hence, ‘Sasha’ not just survives physically, but also emotionally as she lets go of her guilt.

Apex was released on April 24, 2026. It is directed by Baltasar Kormákur, who also helmed Everest. The film is set in the fictional world of Wandarra National Park, but it was shot in Australia’s famous Blue Mountains to capture a raw, realistic feel. The cliffs, rushing rivers and dangerous terrain add more tension to the story. Charlize Theron reportedly performed her own stunts, adding authenticity to Sasha’s physical fight.
