New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart could miss the remainder of the NFL season after further tests showed his knee injury is more serious than initially feared.
Dart suffered the injury during the opening possession of Monday’s 28-6 defeat to the Los Angeles Rams, with Giants coach John Harbaugh initially suggesting the team had avoided a “devastating outcome”.
However, new reports suggest that Dart is expected to miss an extended period and could require season-ending surgery.
Harbaugh said on Tuesday that medical evaluations were still ongoing and declined to provide a timetable for Dart’s return.
“It’s an ongoing conversation about the health of a player, of a person,” Harbaugh said on a video call with reporters. “We’ve got to prepare for the range of possibilities.”
Dart was injured on just the seventh snap of the game when Rams linebacker Byron Young hit him from the right side.
The contact sent Dart into linebacker Josaiah Stewart, whose challenge undercut the quarterback’s legs and caused him to land heavily.
Dart immediately grabbed his left knee before heading to the blue medical tent. He later limped to the locker room and was officially ruled out early in the third quarter.
Jameis Winston set to take over
With Dart facing an extended absence, the Giants are preparing for Jameis Winston to take over at quarterback.
Harbaugh has backed the veteran to handle the situation, while acknowledging that the team is still waiting for a final diagnosis on Dart.
“We’ve learned a lot more [about Dart’s knee],” Harbaugh said. “When we know what direction we’re going to have to go or whatever it might be, we’ll announce that. But we don’t have that yet, so I don’t want to get out over our skis on that.”
Winston struggled after replacing Dart against the Rams, completing 11 of 27 passes for 111 yards and an interception.
The Giants also have Jake Haener on their practice squad, although Winston is expected to get the majority of the opportunities while Dart is unavailable.
The 32-year-old signed a two-year, $13 million contract extension earlier this month and will now be asked to take charge of the offense during a potentially lengthy spell without the team’s starting quarterback.
Dart had made an encouraging start to his second NFL season after showing plenty of promise as a rookie in 2025.
He was particularly impressive in the Giants’ season-opening win over the Dallas Cowboys, completing 23 of 29 passes for 230 yards and three touchdowns while adding 54 rushing yards.
